IMHO, one should not use a blue badge bay unless you display the badge. IMHO, I am waiting for a badge to be issued is not acceptable. Attendants should challenge anyone who does not display a badge. It is reasonable to challenge anyone who appears to be physically fit. Particularly those whose face does not match that displayed on the badge.

There is only one small problem with this. There is no such thing as a "Blue Badge bay".

The Blue Badge scheme does not apply to private car parks. Anyone, who is disabled under the terms of The Equality Act 2010 can use a disabled parking bay. If they are also Blue Badge holders, they don't need to display it.

The Equality Act doesn't say that able-bodied drivers can't also use disabled parking bays. OK, they shouldn't, but they can.

This probably contravenes the contract terms & conditions for the car park. But, the contract terms & conditions for the car park usually state that you shouldn't park in a disabled bay without displaying a badge. This, in itself, contravenes The Equality Act.

What part of "the Blue Badge scheme does not apply on private property" is so difficult to understand?

This is clearly stated twice in the docs that come with the badge and on the websites of every issuing authority in the UK!

Ok, so in the 3 months it took for the local council to issue our blue badge, how do you propose that my partner ensure that nobody parks so close as to restrict her wheelchair access, or should she have just not gone to work for those 3 months?

What actually happened is she came to a special arrangement with the multistory by her work, but this isn't always feasible. For everything else she had to rely on me, and sometimes we'd cause a lovely jam in the car park if I had to roll the car 2/3rds of the way out of it's space to make room for the chair to get in.
There are many disabled people who do not have or maybe forgot to bring their badge. I merely opined that they should not park in a spot marked for blue badge holders. If they do the attendant ought to challenge them.

I am pleased your partner was able to agree a dispensation.

    Please don't flame.

I do understand the blue badge scheme. Where did I state that the scheme applied to private property?

I say slam them to the wall.
I am in the very same situation and quite often get looks from folk when using a disabled bay at Tesco.
Sometimes I even start walking with a heavy limp so that I dont get the looks.
I cant stand ignorant people who enjoy looking down their nose at folk. Write to the company, stuff that, write to the papers.

Old thread but was just looking up badges threads. I have a badge but never had comments and cant remember funny looks maybe i dont pay attention or give eye contact much, maybe it depends on location as dont alway see people while parking my town.

Maybe people think I'm waiting for relitive. I am 28 male slim dont look ill, but have m.e cfs and nerve joint pain and really helps me parking close so dont get so much delayed fatique.

I can see why some people challenge people as I hear people sell them illigally. I keep mine inside now incase gets stolen due to value.

I cant understand why people give looks to wheelchair users :( :S

I have slight limp due tendon stiffness but I dont really look ill, maybe people think i look to thuggy in leather jacket and trainers.

It does seam a tad unfair to get free parking in some places as some people rich with them. If it saves £2000 in congestion charges london no wonder they abused. I just want a close space id bet happy pay parking etc in my town.

I am thinking maybe if have decent car is why get looks, i drive a £400 banger

I been checked photo twice in 4 yrs by traffic warden I guess it better than none, If checked more would catch more people
