thanks for the various replies. not gone quiet and not hiding £600 but been to see the parents. i get the "morality" and my initial response of "tough" was due to the fact that my parents have had to cancel a bathroom fitting and rearrange it, due to the fact tiles wont be delivered as they have had to buy somewhere else, that its cost them more money and the attitude of the shop was "tough". I thought that by having given a deposit that they should have been able to rely upon that in order to get their order fulfilled and that once the shop knew that the tiles were no longer stocked, surely they should have called and told my parents in plenty of time. They are speaking to the credit card company to get advice on where they stand so will update when i know more0

What on earth has the credit card company got to do with it.
Your parents have received an overpayment.
They can either pay it back or keep looking over their shoulder for the next 6 years.
You really cant expect the first company to pay for the extra costs to the company who they eventually bought from.
So now youre sounding as if you and your parents are trying to get something for nothing.
At the very least you are all being dishonest.
No different to stealing by finding.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I understand their frustration, but all the shop have done wrong is not given your parents a coutesy call. They are not responsible for the item going out of stock.
That doesn't justify morally or legally keeping £600 which is not yours.
Technically once you realise it then becomes theft i.e. deliberate deprivation, but the problem is it's very hard for anyone to prove you knew so a criminal conviction is highly unlikely, but technically it becomes criminal.
The fact that your parents have missed out on a bargain because the tiles went out of stock is not really the fault of the shop.0 -
As soon as the original shop demonstrates what payment were received it will become clear the OP does know the money is not theirs, and refusal to return it will become criminal. All the OP has to do is phone up the original shop tell them they have refunded too much and to charge it back, and then issue a correct refund. It's bloody simple.0

Financially, you should "ring fence" the money in an easy access savings account for the 6 months, so that it's still readily available if and when they ask for or take it back.
Why not just give it back ?0
