A massive £2 OPd from vouchers received from gfk.

Not much else happening - boiler finally being fitted hopefully tomorrow. Need to empty lounge and pull back carpet as they need to replace gas pipes. Eeekk! Hopefully will result in a warmer house, quieter boiler and lower gas bills. I can hope!!

Am also waiting on someone getting back to me about taking out and refitting shower cubicle to stop any more leaks before finally getting kitchen ceiling fixed. They can't guarantee getting it out in one piece, so may end up buying a new unit. Still at the minute can't use that shower at all so pretty useless.

Another £10 OPd from VO voucher

Actually went to *sda to do food shop due to having a £5 voucher but managed to spend £92!! Definetly confirms to me that I spend FAR less shopping online.

Bough DD1 a sewing pattern, the material & thread to make pyjama bottoms on her sewing machine for Xmas - £20.35!!! :eek:No wonder not many people make their own clothes anymore! I just wanted her to have something she could make as soon as she wants to start at Xmas. I had set out to buy 2 lots - soon changed my mind!!

Boiler fitted yesterday and hallway radiators refitted. House is definetly so much warmer. Cleaned carpets in lounge/diner as well. All furniture piled up lounge end at the mo while other end dries!!

We are going to have a very non-MSE week.

DD1 has just dropped a massive surprise on us. The school have asked to her take a foreign exchange student in from Wednesday!! We hadn't volunteered because DD1 has a busy week of rehearsals for a show and won't be at home very much. However someone has dropped out and school is desparate.

The school says just to take student along to rehearsals, however will be a bit boring for them.

I also feel that we ought to entertain them so feel a visit to London coming on at the weekend - never cheap! Also meal out, cinema, & whatever else?

What have we let ourselves in for? Any ideas?

In my experience, foreigh exchange students are interested in 'Traditional' English food (fish & chips???, beef stew, curry!, english breakfast) and maybe a bit of shopping and generally being involved in family life - how long would it be for?

I am still friends with my student I had as a placement at work (8 years ago) and she is still mad about trying english food everytime she comes over.

  • Anything more local that you could show them round? I bet there's something local that (even if you're bored of it) they might find interesting. Or get on the "London for Free" website?

Mostly just allow them to be involved. You could do baking... I enjoyed this with my French exchange Mum - she had me weighing/counting in French and translating the recipe book!!!

    Hi MCI & MRN,

Thanks for the advice, now I've been to the meeting I have more details.

They are arriving Wednesday evening and going home Tuesday. On Sunday when DD1 had her 8hr show rehearsal the school has activities organised anyway. DD1 should've been there as well but school says OK if she misses it. Just need to take student.

Show organisers have also said OK for student to go along to eveing rehearsals.

Have though about local attractions, or lack of. We've all decided on a day trip to London to see the sights on Saturday.

The school has organised some local activities during the school day as well. Think I'll try MRNs idea of baking as well as that's something we all enjoy.

Looking forward to it now - although hopefully will get a 'nice' child.

On MFW news - 1poll have paid out so £40 OPd. Need to find £12.50 from somewhere to knock off another month!

Wages from second job this week (and probably next) are being used to host German student. So no transfers to savings pot. Visiting London on Saturday and showing her the sights.

She arrived yesterday, seems lovely, very quiet and conversations are a little awkward but her english is good enough. She's probably also very nervous of staying in a strange country with people that don't speak her language.

Have finally just reached payout on T0luna. Used to reach payout (£15) about every 6 weeks, but spent an awful lot of time on it. Haven't got there since May, was determined to get there and then stop. Other survey sites pay far better, with less screening out.

Have taken MRN up on her idea - Our German student would like to do some English baking tomorrow evening - she would like to try scones and shortbread. My girls have chosen brownies and flapjacks. She's more relaxed and chatty today. I just hope she's enjoying herself with us.

  • Glad your exchange student is keen to get involved in some family baking. Should be good fun with a bit of English learning on the side!
