I think you'll find that it was always like that everywhere until about 2010 which was when Ryanair unilaterally altered their terms and conditions and started enforcing everywhere.

Haven't used RyanAir since 2010 so could be!

Not really a fan of the underhand way ryanair sneaks in charges and runs its pricing, however I have flown with them 10 times and only ever been delayed twice, and that was not very long. They are efficient.

As regards these charges, don't blame Ryanair, blame the Spanish government

Spain is in big trouble, they need to raise cash, but taxing flights is not the way. All this will do is put off people from visiting, it will hit tourism even more and harm the already battered economy.

Its an airport charge not a 'tax' and only gets levied when the aircraft is at the airport.
When is a tax not a charge? And when is a charge not a tax. If this goes to the Spanish governement even indirectly then its a tax.
  • The Spanish are correct to try and find ways of increasing income to meet their obligations, however It is not right for Ryanair to add charges retospectively, it would be like getting a knock on the door from Tesco saying "you know that can of Tuna you bought 2 Weeks ago? we need an extra 40p for a Tuna charge just levied"

Ryanair are a Business that have priced their products according to what they believe will sell well and return a profit, if they have not priced them without incorporating potential increases in Airport charges then thats their problem and not the cutomers who have already bought.....What next?...Oils gone up and we want another tenner from you?

Ryanair seem to do what they want and its time the authorities came down on these chancers

I'm sure there's a way that Ryanair could have paid the fee in advance at prevailing rates, in the same way that passengers pay for fares in advance at prevailing rates.
  • A few of us posters got news of this last week from Ryanair.

Hopefully it will only be a small rise according to Spanish newspapers.

They can recharge you and IF IT WENT DOWN, you can claim a refund

4.2.2 Taxes, fees and charges imposed on air travel are constantly changing and can be imposed after the date that your reservation has been made. If any such tax, fee or charge is introduced or increased after your reservation has been made you will be obliged to pay it (or any increase) prior to departure. Similarly, if any such tax, fee or charge is abolished or reduced such that it no longer applies to you, or a lesser amount is due, you will be entitled to claim a refund of the difference from us.

Any refund I am sure, will get an added admin Fee.

    "Never fly Ryan Air"- simples.

Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

I've only skim read this thread, but the increase (for most of the more 'package holiday' type destinations) works out at less than £1. Madrid and Barcelona's is potentially an increase of 100%.

I don't agree with Ryanair making existing bookings foot the bill, but I don't see why it can't be costed into the pricing structure now as it's a known cost.

These fees rarely go down unfortunately and this Spanish change in tax has been a bit of a nightmare over the last few months, even to the point where Brussels are keeping an eye on what's happening because they think the proposed increases (which I believe are taking affect from 1st of July) haven't gone through the full Spanish government procedure.

This 'tax' has a variety of names, and can be charged for arrivals, departures or in some cases both. If memory serves me correctly AENA charges these on departures. There's several various fees that airlines get charged covering all types of things and various elements of these charges are passed onto the passenger via ticket prices and some are absorbed by the various airlines within running costs.

If you're ever interested in seeing these charges (but trust me, you'll have to be VERY bored) you can usually get them off of most airport's websites.

Is there a hotel sojourn tax in Spain and could the same thing happen in hotels you already booked/paid for?
