Chilli looks fab jumblejack, i do a similar trick with the carrots & lentil, though i use quorn mince. Iwas left with too many nightmares from my mother cooking mince. I cant eat the stuff unless i mince it myself or its top whack quality. So quorn it is.
Im glad you said that!! I was actually thinking whilst I was chucking it all in whether the family would even notice if it was quorn or soya mince!

What is the difference between soya and quorn and can carnivores tell that it is a meat free option?

    Cheers me dears

I was a veggie for many years, and I personally think quorn mince is much superior to soya - I can definitely tell if it's soya, but I have cooked quorn mince for people who didn't know (because they didn't think, should have been a giveaway if I was eating it) and thought it was meat.

Just what I wanted to hear:j

The big question: Is it cheaper than meat too?

As I've just googled the question I asked in the last post, I know what you mean:rotfl:

I have found that it is possible to make a chilli with no meat or meat substitutes so I will therefore be going to the next step, next time!!!!

This guy uses just beans n veggies:
    http://www.jamieshomecookingskills.com/recipe.php?title=vegetarian-chilli
I can easily adapt that. Will still throw my magical lentils in for good measure too ;)

    Edit:
    Costing:
    3 tins kidney beans 54p
    2 tins toms 50p
    1 pack of mince £1
    Lentils 40p
    Onions 10p
    Carrots 25p
Spices etc not worth costing as I bulk buy.

    Let's round it to £2.80

Looking at the stock pot again, I reckon I could get 16 portions from it without too much hassle.
    Say 18p a portion!!!!!!!:j

    Question folks:

I never freeze whole pies as I make them on dinner plates. Has anyone managed to get round this (without me buying different dishes preferably.

    Cheers

All those beans and lentils AND soya might have interesting effects!
I wonder if you could line the plate with something - maybe a double layer of foil - so that you could lift it off?

Verdict on bulked out chilli: nom!
OH had thirds not seconds!!! Not a single word was mentioned about the content of the chilli:money: Yay! They didn't suspect. :D
It was plenty tasty enough. Needed a lot of yoghurt to tame it for the kids though. We used 7 portions and only used a third of the pot. So there is actually 20 servings in there!!!! Mega cheap:money:

Great news supersally. Well done cleggie for thinking it through first. Have fun baking :)
    jumblejack the chilli looks delicious.

The rice fritters reminded me of something my MIL used to make years ago. She would use up LO rice by frying an onion, adding the rice and then mixing an egg and salt and pepper, and frying it all together. She called it mock fish. I don't know if it was something they did in the war, but she was good at using LOs. Happy memories :)

I've updated my signature. Not too bad for a first attempt, if you look at the whole month. Onward and upward for next month!!

I'm going for £75 again for each week for June.

You can start it whenever you want. Just keep a tally of what you spend and how much you want to set it for and there will be a link in a while putting the June one up, sometime on here, saying new thread or something.

Oh thank you thats great :T

Okay then I declare £300 for June GC this is for all food/drinks/toiletries/cleaning/cat food/takeaways for me, OH and 1 cat.

This is a total shot in the dark

I am not taking into account what OH spends on booze-he likes a drink (not to excess) but this is his treat and he pays for it :rotfl:

I will update my signature to keep track

My lovely oh has no idea i put lentils & grated carrots to bulk out mince based dishes. In fact i even add them to a cottage/ shepherds pie with the chopped meat left over from a roast. The kids also have no idea, a very sneaky partner/mum i am.
Quorn mince & chunks used to be £1.50 for a pack 300g at farmfoods, it has now gone up to £2 per pack. The last time i looked in lidle they were £1.49 though i have no idea if they were on offer. The main supermarkets tend to be £1.80 - £2, though they do have offers from time to time such as 2 for £3. Sometimes even a £ a pack. They have 500g packs available but i dont know the cost for them.
Soya i think has a more chewy texture, to be sneaky quorn would be the best to use. If your family dont know its there they wont realise the difference. I tricked my dad for a few months with the quorn mince & chunks.
The chunks are good in fajitas & make a nice curry. The trick is to use a highly flavoured sauce. :rotfl:
