I am new to mystery shopping and somewhat confused having read through the beginning of this thread. Does my income, for tax purposes, include the reimbursement for whatever I have had to purchase doing the shop? So for example, If I bye something for £5.00 that I am reimbursed for and recieve a £5.00 fee, do I then have to pay tax on £10.00 or £5.00?
Many thanks for any help, as this has me very confused at the moment0 -

you will have to pay tax on the fee + reimbursement on most occasions I thinkThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Tref I hope this doesnt seem rude but there is a derth of conversation on this through the last several mystery shopping threads. Take a bit of time and read back over them I'm sure you'll find the answer as its going to vary alot depending on the specific job. This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.:j:j:j:j0 -
Just to add alittle something to the pdf discussion.
I noticed the other day that when I scan a document or whatever then click file > save as > .... In the little window that pops up for you to choose where to save it, you name your file in the first box then the box beneath automatically default to .jpg but if I click the drop down arrow next to it I can scroll down through the file types to .pdf, select it and automatically save as a .pdf file.

Forums are live, fast moving things that can hold so much information that it can be hard to find what you are looking for. They are also based around the idea of posting and getting answers, so, at the risk of going against everyone who complains about questions being asked that may have been asked before, I would say it would be more helpful to answer the question than to say they should search for the answer through 100's of pages of postings. Nothing against you N.I.M but the number of times the question gets posted and then it doesnt get answered just told to look back make an answer hard to search for.
The very basic position of Tax against reimbursements is that if you get a benefit from the purchase you need to pay tax on it. Benefits could be, but are not limited to, eating food (replacing a meal) or products you keep. In many cases therefore you will need to declare the reimbursement as taxable income and not an expense.
Good Luck with Mystery Shopping tref2, I am sure you will find it enjoyable, I have for a very long time now!0 -

Normally I'd agree with you but if you look back over the last few pages, you'll see I have answered the question. I have no issue answering the question and regularly do so but, as with so many of the regulars on here, after a while the frequency of it being asked does warrant my reaction above. This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.:j:j:j:j0 -

Plus, not everyone agrees on how to treat reimbursements anyway. Every time it's asked you'll get as many opinions as you do responses.0 -

This is also true. Wish HMRC would actually come up with a set of rules for this rather than judgement this and level of benefit that cr*polaThis was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.:j:j:j:j0
