Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

I cannot believe this - it IS a joke question, yes? Why should the retailer have to pay out because of the inteptitude of the user? I would add that using hedge trimmers requires the user to take care at all times, and slicing trhrough the power cable is one of the most elementary things to watch out for. There was no fault in manufacture, and expecting the shop to provide a refund due to the stupidity of the owner I hope will receive the response it deserves.
There are NO mitigating circumstances, the angle of the cable has no bearing - it was probably coloured ORANGE to provide a contrast between the green background of the hedge, but the user still cuts through it. Under SOGA, this is a non-starter, as the damage was misuse. If the user is so accident prone, I suggest a cordless one - but then that will probably result in fingers being cut off and be the subject of a different refund claim - get someone capable in and pay them the going rate.
If this was a MS 'return' exercise, I would fully expect the retailer to be sympathetic, but not do anything, other than arrange for a chargeable repair. It it at times like these that I realise working in retail has some major downsides too....

WOW! Has someone upset you?
In all honesty I doubt mimi will get his money back. But I'm not convinced the rant was necessary. People talk about the forum being 'cliquey' (sic) but when people send a load of abuse for no good reason (I can only assume that Mimi has recently ran over your dog, or you REALLY like Andy Murray) then regulars tend to close rank.
Anyway maybe you don't need this forum as I can see your a regular MSE user. Maybe it's our loss.
Peace outWell, you can tell by the way I use my walk
