  • Such good news. :j Sounds as though he is on the mend.

    Thank you :)

My gosh, just had a heart attack, OH saw his back legs disappearing underneath the oven and grabbed hold. I managed to reach in and grab him from the front but he/we couldn't get his head out... managed to pull the panel out and get him out - NO IDEA there was a gap at the bottom of all the kitchen panels! It's only about 2 inches big but he got his head in there. Little mischief maker.

    Evidently feeling better then!!!

    Thanks :)

My gosh, the £50 odd order from Zooplus which contained one (40L) bag of litter and RC food.. it struck me that I could be doing this so much cheaper! However if their poo smells less on good food and it makes their coats/eyes/ears healthy then it's worth the money... I saw Gocat in Iceland for £1.50 odd and I'm paying sooo much more for RC!

You know you can get far better food for the cash than RC.

Zooplus has it at £46.90 for 10kg on the kitten food.

    RC ingredients
Chicken meal, brown rice, corn gluten meal, corn, chicken fat, chicken, dried egg product, natural chicken flavor, wheat gluten, dried beet pulp (sugar removed), L-lysine, anchovy oil (source of EPA/DHA), sodium silico aluminate, dried brewers yeast, soya oil, pea fiber, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), sodium tripolyphosphate, salt, dried brewers yeast extract (source of mannan-oligosaccharides), choline chloride, taurine, Vitamins [DL-alpha tocopherol acetate (source of vitamin E), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), niacin supplement, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2) supplement, D-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin A acetate, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), folic acid, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement], Trace Minerals [zinc oxide, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], marigold extract (Tagetes erecta L.), L-Carnitine, preserved with natural mixed tocopherols (source of vitamin E) and citric acid, rosemary extract.
The things I've highlighted basically have zero place in a cats diet, they'll come right out the other end.

Has a feeding guide of 80g per day up to 4 months. So if you went with that feeding guide a 10kg bag would last 62 days and cost 75p per day to feed.

For the same price you could get orijen, arcana, taste of the wild, fish4cats, applaws.

    Say you go with orijen

    Ingredients
Fresh chicken meat (22%), chicken meat meal (18%), fresh salmon (7%), turkey meat meal (5%), fresh chicken liver (5%), herring meal (5%), steamed potatoes, chicken fat (5%), sweet potato, Peas, fresh perch (3%), fresh egg (3%), fresh turkey meat (3%), fresh trout meat (2%), alfalfa, fresh herring (2%), seaweed, pumpkin, chicory root, carrots, spinach, turnip cabbage , apples, cranberries, currants, licorice root, angelica root, fenugreek, marigold flowers, fennel seeds, peppermint leaves, chamomile flowers, dandelion, summer savory, rosemary, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium.
50g per day feeding guide. Bag is only 7k, but will last 70 days and cost 64p a day to feed.

So for 11p less per day you'll be feeding the best kibble available. Grain free, just meat and veg, no crap, no pointless fillers.

Acana will work out cheaper again.

I know he's not great right now so you want to settle his tum, but when he's back to 100% and all settled in, if I were you I'd seriously consider dropping the RC because it really isn't that great a food. Especially for the price.

Well said Rev. :T Never done the maths but I have fed Orijen to my cats and found even my fussiest eater ate it up, especially the fish variety. She was needing building up and this did the trick. Her stools were less smelly too.

Doesn't work for all though.... I would like to feed mine Orijen or TOTW, but none of my five will touch either, unless I hand feed it to them which obviously is not practical. And, yes, I have done it "properly" - introducing it gradually and not just switching etc.

Royal Canin is the only decent quality food (and it is good quality even though it has grains added), that all of mine will eat consistently without getting bored and without turning their noses up at it. And believe me, I've bought many others over the years, yet this still holds true.

Having said that, they are healthy and happy with shiny coats and lots of energy and the two pedigrees win regularly at the cat shows they go to with fantastic reports from the judges - so the food they eat (RC and Grau Grain Free wet) must be suiting them ;)

e.g. - here's an excerpt from Spot's last show report:
"...Sleek body well developed, strong bone and balanced tail. Short coat lovely texture and presentation..."

    And for Lula:
A very attractive young girl showing excellent maturity. ... Overall good conformation and condition, a lovely strong girl. Coat dense and luxurious, very well presented..."

We have 3 cats, 2 will eat almost any cat food. The 3rd was a worry. He is an adpopted stray - skin & bones when we encountered him. But he refused to eat anything other than Whiskas Temptations, Tescos Finest Cat Food with Tuna and tinned tuna. I can only assume he was getting nourishment elsewhere when he came to us.

After dicovering that tinned tuna was not an ideal diet for a cat, I tried Royal Canin for fussy eaters -all 3 eat it happily and I think it works out cheaper than wet food in the end. There is much less mess and waste.

I notice you have a BSH black silver tabby as your avatar. Is this one of your cats?

No, that was just a cute picture I found off the internet which it is very similar to Friday, although she's a DSH.

The two I show are my snow-spotted and brown-spotted Bengals. In a bit of a lull at the moment though, no shows now until 20th May!! The ones in April were either too far away, or were single-breed shows.

Do you show your BSHs? I see a lot of them at shows (they are, after all, the most popular breed registered with the GCCF) and they are beautiful ;)

I'm not saying cats who have RC will Not do well. Or that's it's an awful food. Just that you can get better for the cash.

But ingredients speak for themselves. Any food with that much filler is not worth £45 a bag.

Let's face it. The majority of cats get go cat and whiskas and do absolutely fine. Doesn't make it a good food. Of course not all foods suit all cats. Same as not all foods suit all people.

RC is a decent mid range food, but with a premium food price tag. That's all I'm saying. And the ingredients speak for themselves. Orijen is 100x better and cheaper to feed. Why would people not want to at least try feeding something that's better and cheaper?

My opinion is based solely on ingredients and price.

I agree! I think Orijen etc are better foods, just wish my lot would eat them! But not even one out of the five.... that's cats for you ;)
