Brand new kitten sick on Royal Canin

Options
Hello chaps

Just got our new kittens! They've been fed go kat and felix... and chicken broth?! !!!!!!?! Weirdos, didn't know that last part.. but anyway, they've taken straight to the DRIED royal canin babycat (they're 7.5 weeks old) with no problems

Boy cat (Sprite) wolfed down some kitten instinctive Royal Canin in gravy yesterday but then we found a sick in the carry basket! Nice!

What should I do... it was maybe 1/4 of a pouch... should I try it in a few days with only a teaspoonful a day?

Here they are:

    aww.. they are cuties!!

it might be that he just ate it too quickly, so it came back up or it was too rich for him. You can try giving less with more feeds or a little along side his normal food and gradually reduce one and increase the other.

  • I wasn't sure what to do with feeding them, so we put loads of dried down and they ate it periodically, but I thought they'd eat more than they did... perhaps it's little and often? Girl cat wasn't interested in her OWN bowl of wet, but tried to get boy cats (who stood on the entire plate to reach it, was SO cute)

I recommend small feeds at the moment.

What's probably happening is that the kitten is finding the new food REALLY tasty, so gobbling down too much, too fast.

The usual advice is to start to feed them what they were being fed before and transition to your preferred choice gradually. Felix and Go Cat may not be top of the range but loads of cats do perfectly well on them. And there's nothing wrong with chicken broth. If they are eating well you probably don't need to do the first bit - the kitten probably just ate it a bit too fast. And they don't need loads of food anyway - they are still tiny and won't have very big tummies - perhaps that is why the food came back. And all pets do the "what's on your plate looks better than mine" thing. Just keep an eye on them - which shouldn't be difficult as they are absolutely gorgeous :)

  • Good point, thanks :)

They don't seem fussy (yet) - I planned to transition them but unfortunately we had to get them sooner than planned as the mummy cat was ill, and I forgot to ask what they were being fed. Then it was Sunday night and nothing was open so had to make do with the provisions I'd stockpiled.

I'll ration the hungry boy tomorrow, give him time for his tummy to settle today. I was just chuffed that he was sick on the washable pad inside the carry case and not on the carpet/my lap/sofa! What a good boy!

Kittens have tiny tummys and eyes bigger than their stomachs :) so feeding them smaller amounts but more meals is better for now -and then gradually scale back the number of feeds but increase the amount.

Pepsi reminds me of one of my favourite cats ever (I know we're not supposed to have favourites but sometimes ...you just can't help it)
