4 month old Laptop gets hot/fan on constant - Can I go back to Comet?

with a report saying the BIOS had been updated and the heatsync (no idea what that is) replaced -
Just for your info. A heatsink is basically a lump of metal with lots of surface area and it is stuck onto the computer processor to dissipate the heat that it produces.
If it comes loose or has a build up of dust on it, the processor will probably overheat causing the fan to run continually.

Hi all thank you for your repliesalso go to the Hp support web site and check for BIOS updates
http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support-drivers.html
sometimes fan control settings are changed due to these sorts of problems
I'll get on the HP later tonight and check that out, thanks.Probably all of the bloatware that has been added to the machine. What's the CPU usage? Is there anything using an abnormally high level of CPU time. My antivirus uses a lot when it updates. Maybe your machine is updating and will settle down soon.
Just before making this thread when I was using the HP the other day I checked the CPU usage and it was going between 3% and 5%.
It's good to read that HP are good and will fix problems with a product. I just don't like the thought of having a practically new laptop that has a fault, although I understand things like this can happen. I am not so keen on the thought of having to send it off for a repair. I would rather an exchange but I doubt Comet will even suggest that and me stating the SOGA will go in one ear and out the other because they make up their own rules from the reviews of Comets customer service that I have read online. It seems they just fob you off to the manufacturer like a lot of other retailers do. Luckily, I have recently had the total opposite and I cannot fault Amazon. I bought something in November 2011 and I am sending it back this week for a refund because it developed a fault. No questions asked, no mention of contacting the manufacturer, they just asked me to return it for a refund.
If the updates don't fix the issue I will be going to my local Comet tomorrow evening.0 -
Before you go in with "I know my rights", Comet are well within the SOGA to reject your request for a replacement, and offer you a repair instead after 4 months.stayinganonymous wrote: »I would rather an exchange but I doubt Comet will even suggest that and me stating the SOGA will go in one ear and out the other because they make up their own rules from the reviews of Comets customer service that I have read online.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

Its not a big issue that warrants a replacement a new fan and heat sync and you will be fine.0 -

I thought that was after 6 months. Maybe I read it wrong.New_World_Order wrote: »Its not a big issue that warrants a replacement a new fan and heat sync and you will be fine.
That's fair enough. I realise it's not a big issue. I just don't like the fact I have paid £400 for something and it's faulty, I'm sure most would feel the same.
Either way, replacement, repair or whatever I just want it sorted. Oh! and I also hope that it doesn't come back with scratches if it's sent for repair. I have never had to have a laptop repaired so have no idea how the products are handled.0 -
Done the BIOS update and no joy, it's still hot and the fan still runs constantly.
It has to be the loudest fan I have heard when a Laptop is doing a task. During the BIOS update the fan sounded like a hairdryer  lol.
Another thing I forgot to mention in my first post, although I know it's a small issue, maybe someone could help me fix it. I cannot get the wireless on the HP to connect when I turn on the laptop, the only way to get it to connect is by turning off the wireless adaptor and then a few seconds later turn it on again then I have to click my wireless network and it will connect. I haven't had this issue before so don't know what the problem is or how to fix it, all my other laptops connected automatically when I turned them on... I didn't have to faff around with turning the wireless button on and off to get it to work.0 -

The fan repair, as suggested above, will solve your first problem.
As for your second one, ask here:- Techie Stuff
Good luck

Thanks squeaky
So I took the laptop back to comet this evening. They said I will have to go home and contact HP via phone and they'll get me to do some stuff over the phone and then if that doesn't work they'll send a courier to come and collect it from me.
I stated that it wasn't my place to contact the manufacturer as I bought the laptop from Comet not HP and that they (Comet) need to contact HP and send it off for repair, and so then they accepted to do that
It wont get sent off until Monday now though, so will stay at the Comet store until then. I just need to wait for the phone call to let me know it's come back from HP.
It states on the repair receipt they gave me that my product will be ready to collect by 10th May? that's 3 weeks! I didn't think it would take that long.
They also stated that if it's not a hardware issue and is software then I am not entitled to a repair or anything. Learn something new every day.0 -

This is one of those instances where enforcing your legal rights can actually work against you.
Although you were correct in saying that you had no obligation to contact HP, if you had done this you may well have had the laptop returned to you quicker.
HP would have collected it from you, and when repaired would have delivered it back to your house.
Now they have to collect it from Comet and when it's fixed, wil return it back to the store.
The Comet staff will then (hopefully) call you the same day or maybe the next day, and you will have to go and collect it.0 -

No, the 6 month rule is completely different. It refers to the burden of proof, for example, within the first 6 months it is the retailers responsibility to prove a fault is not inherent. After 6 month, the burden is on the consumer to prove the fault is inherent.
All the Sales of Goods Act states is you can accept goods within 'reasonable' time - this will vary between products (usually between 7-28 days). After that the retailer can effectively choose the more cost effective remedy. If they fail to do so within 'reasonable' time, you can then reject goods.0
