4 month old Laptop gets hot/fan on constant - Can I go back to Comet?

Hi I bought a HP Pavillion g6 (not sure of exact model but it has i3 processor and 4 gb of ram) in mid December 2011 from Comet.

I set it up the same day I bought it and then stored it away because I continued to use my PC. Today I decided to start using it properly so I created the recovery discs and installed Norton Antivirus. After about an hour of using the laptop I noticed that I could hear a fan? or air blowing from the left side vent constantly and that the area to the left of the touch pad was hot and when I placed my hand underneath the laptop the area in the center was also hot (it was burning my lap).

I am not sure why it was doing this when all I was doing was browsing my Facebook news feed and talking to a friend on Windows Live Messenger. No other programs were running. I have no files, photos or videos saved on the laptop as I have only used it twince since buying it in December.

I have Googled this fan/heat issue and most of the answers I find are to clean the fan for build up of dust on older laptops that are well used. Well I cannot see this being my issue seeing as the laptop is practically brand new and has only been used twice, it has also been stored in the plastic wrapper/bag that it came in so no dust could get to it.

Basically I am just wondering if I could take this back to Comet and would I be entitled to a refund, exchange or repair or something? even though the first 30 days have gone? I'm really not happy with the laptop and how hot it gets. My mum has a Dell laptop that's a year old, cost half the price and has a crappy processor etc but when I have used that on my lap recently (for a longer period of time than mine and with different programs running) it did not get hot and neither did I hear the blowing/fan noise.

Now I wish I had used my laptop more when I first got it and then I could have taken it back within 30 days of buying it.

  • Laptops are notorious for collecting dust from fabric, clothing or seating which does block vents. A quick once over with the duster attachment of the vacuum would clear this,

Ooops, the thing is new! Well make ure that all updates hbe completed, it could take some time. Then visit HPs website to run updates for fan or other.

Or you could take it back, but you are at the will of some geek who offer a repair! Then again, knowing that comet has bin in trouble, solution 2 may help

Are you careful to use the laptop on a flat hard surface so that none of the air inlet vents are blocked?

It could be hard to prove this is a fault and not normal for this model. As has been said, place it on a flat surface (not fabrics), ensure all updates have been downloaded and let it settle.

Many laptops get very hot even if not being worked particularly hard.

We had the same problem with hp pavillion g6 we bought about 6 months ago in tesco. We had to contact HP about it ( not sure if comet are the same ) and after doing diagnostics while they were on hone and some updates from them we sent it Back and had fan replaced. Never had a problem again.

    Definetly get it checked out

also go to the Hp support web site and check for BIOS updates

sometimes fan control settings are changed due to these sorts of problems

Probably all of the bloatware that has been added to the machine. What's the CPU usage? Is there anything using an abnormally high level of CPU time. My antivirus uses a lot when it updates. Maybe your machine is updating and will settle down soon.

I have an HP G6 which I bought last June from Comet - it had been getting overly hot and the fan working overtime!

Took it back to Comet who said they'd send it to HP to be looked at - 48 hours later it was back with a report saying the BIOS had been updated and the heatsync (no idea what that is) replaced - they'd also replaced the keyboard and top cover as the left mouse key was a bit sticky!

To be honest after all I'd read on here about Comet I was dubious about taking it back but can't fault the service I got and the laptop has had no problems since.

We had an overheating problem with our HP laptop and HP were great. After trying to sort it out on the phone (which didn't work) they sent a courier to pick it up,who parcelled it up in front of my husband, fixed it and sent it back via courier all within a few days. No problems since (touch wood!) and I was impressed by the whole service.
