Same as many meals today - smother the taste of the main ingredient so it's completely lost. A style of cooking that evolved in countries where the raw materials were too poor to be savoured.

Elizabeth David has a lot to answer for,

If you have one of her early cookbooks though, they sell for hundreds !

I buy chick peas £2 something from Tesco for 2kg packet..Do them in the slow cooker. Otherwise mainstay of pulses is home grown runner beans, fresh, or green dried in a dehydrator and dried in the pod.
Tinned peas are the mushy value or basics.

I prefer Birds Eye petit pois, as are very tender, and sweet. I do occasionally buy supermarkets own, but they aren't the same.
    Oh well...

I buy Iceland's peas. My favourite are Bird's Eye but they are too expensive. I've tried peas from most of the other supermarkets but I think the Iceland ones are the nicest and cheapest (£1 for 900g).

Cheapest, but check unit prices. Smaller bags of birds eye were cheaper per kg than the 'on offer' Morrisons brand last time we bought some.

My last bag of peas was Asda Smartprice. I was surprised how nice they were.
