Question: Why didn't you just get another cat? It's obvious to me that you can only cope with a totally self-sufficient animal.

Sorry.... slightly off topic, but felt I just had to say (in case people are reading this who don't know any better) - pet cats are not "totally self-sufficient". In fact, my five would be completely lost without lots of love and attention from me and DH each day. I don't think any domesticated pet is totally self-sufficient ;)

    What a shame.

I think your immaturity is the cause of this outcome. I don't think you are able to really consider the bigger picture.

I wish I knew where you lived, I'd ask the one of the animal charities that do home checks to keep an eye on your poor dog simply because you clearly have no clue about animal welfare.

    Cuddles indeed. You are deluded.

Am I being harsh? Yes dead right, it's deliberate.

It's nowhere near as harsh as leaving a tiny puppy home alone for that length of time.

  • OP I really hope you take some time to think about the situation and choose to do the right thing - which maybe to cut back to get a dog walker or give him up to the right home.

I know how hard it is to give up a pet. I rescued a cat a few years ago, after my oldest one died thinking it would be good company for my other cat. I did all the research and got the advice of a vet and spend hours and hours slowly introducing them. Unfortunately the rescue cat did not get on with my cat (even though he had lived with other cats before) and after getting an infected scratch which required antibiotics became very difficult to handle. We kept him for nearly 3 months in total but his dislike of my other cat meant he was confined to a bedroom unless we were there to supervise him - so in the end he had to be rehomed. It was really hard, as it felt like I was loosing yet another cat but he is now much happier in a single cat household. At this age your puppy will easily resettle somewhere else and whilst you will miss him, you can be safe in the knowledge he is getting what he needs.

As for your friends at work telling you it will be fine - what do you think they are going to say? Few people will tell you to your face that you are being cruel and need to get rid of your dog - because it's a upsetting thing to say! If you doubt the advice you've been given here please call a vet or the RSPCA. Do it from a call box and don't give your name if you want but please get professional advice.

I have to admit that if I knew where you lived and who you were I would be calling the RSPCA. I also think you may run into problems when your neighbours get fed up of the barking that is likely to start soon.

OP, by the sounds of it you've never had a dog before. You appear to have little or no knowledge of a dog's needs beyond feeding and watering. Still waiting for the vaccination reply, I suspect you 'wont be able to afford it', so potentially the first time you take your dog out it could catch one of several fatal diseases.

Please stop thinking about yourself (yes we all know you love this dog), and start thinking about the dog's welfare. No, it doesn't chew... but then you've only had it a week. A really good friend of mine has just had her kitchen destroyed by her 9 month old dog - and he's taken out twice a day and has another dog to play with! A small breed such as the one you have (assuming it's not a crossbreed) will be unlike to cause that much damage, but he could still do quite some harm... or alternatively harm himself. Is your house dog-proof, are all the cables unplugged or in a place that he can't get to?

For what it's worth my opinion of you is that you aren't at the moment being cruel, just misguided. Only you have the power to change your dog's life, by getting a dog sitter/walker, or by re-homing him if you can't afford that. If you don't do that then, yes, you are being cruel. I'd also love to know how you're going to litter train him when he starts cocking his leg... particularly as for the most part you won't be there!

You dont know untill you ask,i regularly look after an ex n/bours dog for free.....love him to bits,in fact when they havent asked me for a while i start getting a bit fed-up and want my 'dog fix'. Try advertising in a local rag, could be other people out there like me who cant have a dog due to their shifts who would like to have your little dude, you coud also find someone en-route to workin nxt village etc.
good luck (coz he does need more attention than at present)

I have to agree with that. I like to go out for a walk just after my evening meal. I don't have a dog as I am out from 7.30am until about 5.30pm. I would enjoy walking a dog and would like see a dog enjoying the walk too.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford dog walkers or being able to go part time and not all workplaces are flexible on extending lunches or shortening hours etc.

Correct - and those pople should not take a dog on.

I will say yhis again, I can not afford the dog walker - but I have one.

What it means is that I, myself have no cash to spare whatsoever - barely enough for my own (cheap) food BUT my cats and dog come first. I took them on and that is it as far as I am concerned.

I have no idea what os going to happen soon as I have a real prospect of having to be on half pay (operation due soon, will be off sick for weeks and won't be able to walk my dog at all so the dog walker will stay in place despite being on half pay myself) for several weeks and the financial side of things drives me up the wall but.. as above - pets have to have a quality of life they were promised when I took them on.

Someone (Caroline?) asked you about vacinations, you have not replied to that.

So I will ask again - is your pup vaccinated? Has he been seen by a vet since you got him? Is he wormed/flea treated? Is he insured? What do you feed him?

For some eye opening, re costs of keeping pets, perhaps have a look here:

Posted this on the other thread (is it just me who cannot keep up with 2 of them? :o )
Are we a nasty cruel bunch who are attacking the op?

No we are not. We are just a group of animal lovers who know that cuddles and love are just not enough.

Lets get positive. We don't know which part of the country the OP is in; we have come over as harsh while trying to give sound advice, but I think plenty of us would help her and the pup if we could.

I'm in the North East and I'm willing to dog walk/sit if the OP is anywhere near me.

    Who else can help?

I'm having trouble keeping up too :o

I can't remember which thread I posted on, but have to hold my hand up for being a bit harsh last night, I just kept thinking of my daughter's Chi's when they were tiny helpless pups

Hi again, the OP has given me permission to ask if anyone in the Stockton on Tees area can help with doggy care while she is at work during the afternoons and evenings?

If she is unable to find local help she is going to give serious consideration to rehoming, but lets see if one of us can help keep this new little pet family together first?

    selfish OP really selfish

Dogs are social creatures and need interactions
your poor dog being stuck at home 9 hours a day
being forced to !!!! in a box - to suit you

Why did you get a dog, if the reason was because someone you knew had puppies and you thought you would like one, is for the wrong reasons for your lifestyle.

Get a grip, you can not give what the dog NEEDS. If you can't afford a dog walker/sitter with your job then you shouldn't have a dog. It's not like a goldfish that needs feeding once a day or so.

Have some heart and let the dog go to a home that can cater for the animals needs not yours.
