I think the OP has not understood that her job commitments mean she is not a suitable owner for a puppy or dog.

That isn't her fault, but the sooner she realises it the better

Had she gone to Dogs Trust to adopt a dog, that's exactly what they would have explained to her.

The same would be the case with any credible breeder who had the wellbeing of their pups in mind rather than profit.

I waited 18 years after my last beloved dog passed away before I brought another dog into my life because family and work life were not compatible with having a dog. He is loved and gets the time and attention he is more than worthy of. The OP needs to remember that it is a two way relationship and you get back what you put in.
  • Sorry if this upsets you, I am sure you love the little mite but I am a great believer that people who are out all day shouldn't consider having a dog in the 1st place. I have a cat who is left alone quite a lot and this pains me however cats are well known for sleeping a lot and just doing as the please but dogs are pack animals and need company and affection. My sons said they wanted a dog but as we are always out and on the go I said it wouldn't be a good idea. My m.i.l just got another dog after saying she wouldn't get one her and her husband both work full time and I wasn't impressed when I heard they had got another.

I don't think the OP does 'love' the dog.

Loving something is wanting what is best for it. She wants to 'possess' it, although it isn't in the best interests of the animal. That's a totally different thing.

I have all my life had dogs (as I type my spaniel is next to me on the sofa snoring!) - and I have always been able to take them to work, or worked from home. I would not consider having an animal as sociable and dependent as a dog if I had to leave it.

Whilst I agree that this is far from ideal, with the amount of dogs being bred these days by people just greedily looking to line thier pockets for a few hundred quid, theres good possibility that a dog will end up in kennels or the pound awaiting death. The OP is providing a warm safe home where the dog is fed, walked, looked after ok it dosent receive attention throughout some of the day but still receives attention.
I guess what Im trying to say is that yes the dog could do with a lot better but could also get a hell of a lot worse.

She has realised now, judging by my recent exchange of PMs with her. I can understand the OP being a bit worried about coming back onto the thread, but she has taken in what has been said and is now looking for help and failing that, will rehome the pup.

That's great news RR - I hope she sticks to her promise.

If I made the OP feel bad then it wasn't my intention however she was in denial of her situation and frankly the update post on the other thread made me see red.

If she was planning on litter tray training it and it's food was dispensed via a timer thing then the dog was being treated no more than a cuter cat.

I suspect the OP is a girl in her early 20's who has seen the celebs with their cutie Chi's....but of course they employ people just to look after their dogs! A different situ from the OP entirely. I also think she would think that such a small dog wouldn't need much exercise and this is true (in comparison to a Labrador for example) but dogs need companionship. I would doubt that when the OP is on her days off she doesn't not go shopping or out with her mates etc so that's more time the pup is left alone.

I really do hope she keeps her word and hopefully it's been a lesson learnt albeit an upsetting one.
