The OP quite obviously knows they are in the wrong which is partially why they're breaking their heart about it.

The people on the x-post have been a lot more constructive.

If the OP knows they've done wrong why the need to post? I would have said it was a bit of a no brainer.
Really you ask if you've been cruel you must be prepared to hear people say yes, actually you have. The OP mentioned the word cruel herself, to berate others for use of the same word seems daft.

If she was looking for fluffy comments about how totally irresponsible it is to have a puppy with no means of adequately looking after it having claimed to have done her "research" in advance the OP has got off far more lightly than she deserves.

The other thread mentions nothing more constructive than you need to rehome it or pay for a dog sitter/walker both of which have been mentioned on here.

Unless you quit your job today, you need to rehome that puppy.

All this dog walker/sitter/getting elderly folk to pop in is nonsense. That puppy needs continual love, attention and TRAINING to begin with - the odd hour from a stranger is not okay.

Frankly, I'm disgusted a breeder would sell a puppy to someone so clueless.

  • I don't think anyone has been unnecessarily unkind to the OP. I'm really damned cross that someone could think that getting a tiny puppy and abandoning it for so very long could be OK. For a social animal it must seem like torture. Social animals do not thrive when they are ostracised from their kind or their people. And ostracised must be exactly how this pup is seeing the abandonment.

Quite apart from the terrible cruelty of leaving it alone for hours on end, it's not going to be very much longer before it starts eating slippers in it's desperate attempts at mental stimulation. Then it will be given up as a young dog and have difficulty being re-homed because it has acquired bad habits.

Puppies and dogs are definitely not suitable pets for people who are not at home all day. Period.
  • I didn't realise dogs were solitary animals who preferred their own company.......

My 16 week old puppy would wreck the house if left on her own for 9 hours a day. Why? Boredom. Dogs need stimulation, exercise and unless you have means of getting someone to do this whilst you are work it IS cruel.

Where exactly did I state this?? Oh, that's right. I didn't.

my daughter has 2 Chihuahuas & I remember how they were as tiny little puppies

a 12 week old left alone for 9 hours & with a cat? hard to believe anyone could be so unwise, wind up perhaps?

if I'm wrong & it's true, the OP wants a good slapping & their pets taken away to safe loving homes

Swan, as posted on the other thread, the possibility of the cat attacking the puppy worries me too.

I've 4 cats and know how well supervised they have to be in the presence of other species. Even the most laid back cat can turn into a hissing, spitting, clawing, biting ball of fury if pushed too far.

Such a young Chi would have no chance against an adult cat.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

Racy, you're absolutely right, Chi's are so tiny, trusting & defenceless

I love cats & have had dozens in my time, but they are what they are, predators, it's their nature

I'm seriously hoping the OP's two threads are wind ups :(

Me too. I can't remember ever wanting a thread to be a wind up as much as these. But I have a horrible feeling that they are for real.

No you didn't. The poster was being sarcastic. Very, very sarcastic indeed. If none of us knew that dogs are pack animals which desperately need to be with their own kind or their human people at all times, we all know it now.

In my opinion anyone who leaves a dog alone all day wants shooting for being so ignorant of their animal's needs and cruelly neglectful. And their dog taken away from them and given to someone more responsible who understand how to care for them properly. No exceptions.

If the OP is getting conflicting advice at work -My guess is people who don't have dogs and are trying to make her feel better-then perhaps she could ring up the RSPCA or an animal rescue place or a vet and ask their opinion.

Frankly I think it's a shame -she obviously loves the dog but didn't realize her lifestyle wouldn't work with a dog and is detrimental to it
