Yes they are. Sainsburys admitted they are rounding up and putting 1p on. They never used to do this did they.

The point is, if you want £10 worth, why should you b forced to carry small change with you?

They admitted to adding 0.1p on, not 1p which equates to about 0.7 milliletres at £1.45 a litre (i think) and that fuel you have paid for will be in the hose so make sure you drain it out

A friend was complaining about the local Asda petrol station doing this, and she was going to write a letter to complain about it. I pointed out that if she filled up twice a week, and it happened every time, it would cost her 2p a week. That's £1.04 a year, maximum. It would take nearly a year of it happening to warrant the price of the stamp, paper, ink, envelope, etc.

They have the automatic dispensers with set amount in New Zealand too.

Wish we had them here, more when filling up my minibus, takes forever when it's on empty and hurts my hand!!

    Top Tip.........
Put the fuel nozzle in the tank & squeeze the handle then get your fuel filler cap & put it in the handle.
Saves you having to squeeze the nozzle & pump clicks off when full.

Did it really though. As another poster mentioned all they're doing is rounding 0.9 of a pence up to the nearest penny. So, assuming you mean this happens to your friend twice per week the likelyhood she's losing only 0.2p per week, a little over 10p a year.

Now, now Neil, you know what they say - "look after the pennies ----", this is a money saving forum after all;)
  • My local Teco has this feature, each pump has set of buttons that allow a set amount (either cost or litres) to be set. Pump stops automatically when reached.
Yes - the newest Tesco that has opened near me has this feature - I've never used it as I tend to just fill up as much as will go in but it is nice to have.

I expect most new stations will have it (and old ones whenever they replace the pumps - how often is this done normally?)

Yes, but if the trigger is "Off", no fuel will run out!

I'd always assumed that the trigger was just a switch for the pump itself and there wasn't any physical means to stop the fuel flowing, but I have no idea why.

I suspect you're correct. Thinking about it logically that wouldn't be a very sensible arrangement.

Does anyone actually know for sure? (apologies to OP for thread hijack!)

I've never got why you can't input the amount of fuel you want and the second the pump gets to that it cuts off saving you EVER going over!? Am I the only one who would like to see that function... Yes have the ability to not set an amount too but I mean I always put the same amount in so for me It would be much easier.

I agree. All 4 of my local Tesco petrol station have this, although I've yet to use it.
  • i think some people are missing the point. This isn't really about the penny, which, to be fair, is never demanded by the garage.

There are two issues here; But before I state them I'll just clarify the issue as some posters don't seem to understand the issue..

Pumps are NOT overcharging. Due to rounding, they only stop on certain values. Next time you fill up, let the pump run slowly and you'll see it increments in jumps of 1p, 1p, 2p, 1p, 1p, 2p. When the fuel is a certain price, the 2p jumps occurs across amounts like £20. For example, when the pump price is 139.9, it stops on £19.99, and then jumps to £20.01.

    The two issues are:

Attitude of petrol station staff. Most are, at best, dismissive, and repeats pointless statements like 'our pumps are checked regularly by the council for accuracy'. Some get very arrogant - this is no doubt down to the fact that over the years, some people have been unable to control their finger and so petrol station staff are used to this being the customers fault. They don't listen and I've had a few arguments and after demonstrating the issue found a sudden change in attitude from the staff.

The other issue is NOT ALL PETROL PUMPS HAVE THIS PROBLEM. Having discussed with a friend that used to work in a petrol station, we think this is down to the flow rate of the pump, which apparently can be controlled by the garage (PLEASE NOTE I HAVEN'T CONFIRMED THIS). But regardless of the cause, some pumps don't do it, so the others clearly have a flaw.

Watchdog made a bit of a hash, particularly by targeting Sainsbury's, and ignoring the fact that not everywhere has the problem.. poor journalism really.

Hope that clears up the issue. :)
