I thought Sainsbury's had a policy where if it went a penny over they ignored it - has happened when i've been paying twice and they always just ignore it anyway.

Thats never happened to me, often goes a penny over but whats the problem, you are getting the amount of fuel that you are paying for.

In the US all pumps have the ability to set an amount and in most cases fuel is paid for before dispensing and then cuts out at the amount paid for

They have the automatic dispensers with set amount in New Zealand too.

Wish we had them here, more when filling up my minibus, takes forever when it's on empty and hurts my hand!!

I can't remember what was said but wasn't it that the issue only occurs when the petrol price is xx0.9, ie, they can't handle a price of 0.9 of a penny. Therefore it'll be a fairly rare event. It certainly never happend to me and I use Sainsbury's on a fairly regular basis.

Back in the early 1970's, before self service pumps were common, I worked in a filling station, and it had pumps where you could lock the trigger in place so while the tank was filling you could do other things like wash the customer's windscreen (all in the hope of a tip of course :D). There was a time when you could also do that at self service pumps but at some point that stopped, and as you say it's now necessary to stand there squeezing the handle until either your tank is full or you've had enough.

I have been known to lift the hose up to drain all the fuel into my tank, so I get the last customers but the next customer doesn't get mine. :p

(apologies to anyone that's ever followed me at a pump)

Typical Watchdog nonsense but I always wondered why some of the garages I have been to have a penny pot. The link from Hampshire Trading Standards explains it.

I always pay for my petrol by credit card to get my cashback.
