Clearly you are "incapable" of reading the thread.

Damn, and I was putting it down to slightly careless word choice when it was obviously just an obnoxious confrontational streak in you

Yes, I know what a noun is, that's why you used the wrong word. What you wanted was an adjective... say unable (like I said) which qualifies the noun. Not my fault you've used a word that can quite reasonably be taken the wrong way.

    Do stop trolling.

I used it AS AN ADJECTIVE, then in order to wind me up you posted some weird definition, as a noun, that nobody ever uses.
Just to show how wrong you are, here's a video of someone with no legs riding a bicycle.

He doesn't have no legs!!!! He's got prosthetic ones.
These people are an inspirartion and your language use is demeaning to what they are achieving in the face of adversity. They are all ten times the person you could ever hope to be.

So these people have had their legs blown off by bombs in Iraq (and other things) but still participate in competitive sport and you're telling me that they are going to break down and cry because you've told them they should be upset by a particular word you don't even have the right definition for?

    Don't make me laugh.
    In summary:

"You won't like me when I'm angry.

"Because I always back up my rage with facts and documented sources."

    The Credible Hulk.

    Lol.

How about you just admit that some people are incapable of driving a manual car, that that is by no means disastrous, and we all move on with our lives.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned that the main advantage of manual is that YOU choose the gear, not the car. I have been in autos where the car kept changing between gears because we were in just the right conditions to confuse it (mind you, I've had the same with some drivers!). Also, I prefer a second gear start and the ability to use the gears to slow me in some wintry conditions, so a manual is perfect for me.

That's not a major problem if you use an auto's full capabilities - you can lock (almost) all of them into either a fixed gear or a "maximum" gear, where it won't change higher than, say, 3rd.

Similarly, for overtaking, just because it's auto doesn't stop you planning ahead and dropping down a gear before going for it rather than waiting for a more-or-less sluggish kickdown to operate. You can also use it for engine braking.

On the other hand, very few auto drivers seem to do anything but stick it in drive and go so it does become a problem in practice!

You can do all that with an auto.

It's been a while, okay, 20+ years, and I remember having those problems. Maybe it was just me!
  • I'm probably being thick here but I don't understand the poll!:)
What's the question and how do the four options relate to that question?

Not just you, it seems a lot of auto drivers just know to shove it in Drive and go. In fact, my step-daughter was professionally taught through her test on an auto and (at least according to her) was only ever shown "forward for forwards, reverse for backwards, park for stopped" because the rest isn't part of the test.

When she got her own car one of her first questions was "what are those 1 and 2 positions for?" followed by deciding they were pointless once it was explained :(

I think we all know that has never been the case. Despite accusations to the contarary, this was the only thread I posted in yesterday.

You should go on countdown. Love to see you battle with dictionary corner and tell them the Oxford English is wrong.

From your own definition as an adjective:

    "3.without ordinary capability; incompetent."

That backs up what I said. I posted the accepted use of the word. Just admit you could have explained yourself better.
He doesn't have no legs!!!! He's got prosthetic ones.

He has no legs. He's not incapable though, He just needs to find a way round the problem. You see the point?

So these people have had their legs blown off by bombs in Iraq (and other things) but still participate in competitive sport and you're telling me that they are going to break down and cry because you've told them they should be upset by a particular word you don't even have the right definition for?

Tripe that doesn't even merit a proper response.

    Don't make me laugh.

    Ok
    Lol.

    Contradict yourself much?
How about you just admit that some people are incapable of driving a manual car, that that is by no means disastrous, and we all move on with our lives.

Some people are, however not everyone who is disabled is 'incapable' and the sweeping generalisation was entirely the problem.

Just admit you could and should have phrased it better.:wall:

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Thanks Joe, I don't feel so thick now! I still prefer manual for the simple reason that I am a control freak.
