Wow Keth! How is your back feeling today?!

I am so envious of your soil - it looks like it's dry already!

  • Morning! No time to post yesterday, as we were outside all day. The forecast isn't good for today, so we've been out for a couple of hours, and now come in for breakfast.

Got the lawn mown yesterday, which I was glad about. This warm, wet weather means it's still growing. Gave some of the clippings to the hens - they love them.

In the polytunnel we planted 12 potato tubers, and a couple of rows of carrots and peas. We'll then be harvesting them about a month ahead of outside crops.

We started to weed and fork over our bottom veg patch. We're hoping to get some parsnips and onions in there today.

We then spent a couple of hours pulling out the division between us and next door. It's very neglected, and we're going to replace it with willow fencing. This is how it started:

And this is where we were by the end of yesterday:

    Back to it, then!

Woohoo - the remaining garlic is pushing through.

This weekend we had visitors so not a huge amount done. I have been planting one of the rock gardens with some alpines kindly provided by my dad. I have also been poking house leeks, aubretia and phlox into the dry stone walls. I have been lifting plants that have been swamped and hidden by the larger shrubs ready to put them into the new cottage garden at the front. OH kindly painted the relocated wooden compost bins green so they belnd in a little more and I need to dig a trench for sunflowers to go in front of it. Children are refusing to play out any more today.....humph.

So pleased its BST. Soon be able to have an hour in the garden after the monsters have gone to bed.

Clairefun - it is great when you suddenly get useable space and somewhere for toddlers to play, we have been here for 9 weeks now and the novelty hasn't worn off. The curves sound perfect.

Noodwah - my OH doesn't weed either, to be fair though I get a lot more time outside than he does. We have a great arrangement where he does the hard labour and I do the fiddly bits which works well for us.

PP - the willow weave looks lovely.

Catz - since moving we have have a couple of bird tables, and have chaffinches, a lovely robin, a thrush (I think) and a finch with green go faster stripes, plus pigeons, doves, etc. Giving the children a lot of pleasure but it is costing a lot in seed. Never mind next year I will have lots of sunflower seed at least.

Kethry - a lot of work there but worth it. Have you had a look at www.allotments4all.co.uk?

Hi, Cyril! Ours is 10' by 20'. We got it about 5 years ago from First Tunnels, but there are lots of other companies. They're not as good to look at as glass houses, but are we could cover a bigger area for our budget, hide it at the bottom of the garden, and at the time we had a 6 year old budding footballer

I've taken some more pics, so will post them later.

Over the weekend I planted lettuce and basil (in the tunnel) and beetroot, broccoli and sprouts, and more carrots and onions.

my back is hurting some today, i was hoping to get out there again and finish the bed off, but i don't think its going to happen. Shame really as i was hoping to get it done before this little warm spell ends tomorrow night - then the rains could water the bed thoroughly.

ah well.. it'll get done when it gets done. Katrina: the bed that i was planting in has been built now for a month, and has had the polytunnel over it for a couple of weeks, which is why its so dry. The rest of the garden is pretty sodden, but its a good kinda sodden - not too squelchy. I'm actually going to have to watch my beds, make sure they don't get too dry, there are tree roots running underneath it that will, i think, take all the water, given half a chance.

hex: i have had a look at those sites.. its not actually an allotment but my garden! I'm thinking of applying for an allotment though, as i am limited in my little garden as to how much i can grow, and i'd really love to be as self-sufficient in terms of fruit and veg as possible. i've started to make enquiries about getting one.

gonna go make some bread now though...

    Morning all!!!

Beautiful day here today, already rather warm, although there was a heavy frost outside when I got up. Have worn white jeans in homage to the sunshine, I can't wait for the summertime. :j

Morning glory and sweet peas are doing beautifully, one sweet pea in particular has shot up, it's like a triffid!! Amazing considering that I forgot to soak them. :o

I have an early finish today so will be doing some kitchen gardening this evening, potting up the seedlings etc. May also get out and start a tidy up outside too, the kids are so happy to be able to play outside without me bundling them up in hats and scarves but it means the garden gets a little crowded with swingball, rackets etc.

Once I've transplanted the flowers, will start on planting some of the salad veg seeds, very tempted by the toms in the hanging baskets. Have just remembered that I've had some acquilegia seeds in the fridge too which were due to come out on Sunday!!

I wish the lavender would hurry up, it's still rather small and as thats got to fill the front garden beds they are very bare until the lavender is big enough to plant out.

Painting still needs to be finished too, :o will make sure that happens this weekend.

Still need to do the following:

    Pot up seedlings.
    Plant veg seeds.
Decide on plants for hanging baskets & windowboxes front and back.
Nag DH to paint front door and step.
Spot of weeding around slabs in front.
Plan back garden planting and clear out old pots for sis.
Nag brother to pick up compost bin.

Lots of nagging there, oh joy.

    Happy gardening all!!

having a mini panic as I havent put any of my seeds in the ground!!!! am v ambitious this year! have prepared four beds for the old crop rotation but now need to find time to sow them. Met a lovely couple via freecycle who have offered some froggy spawn and have got a dustbin from the dump to grow potatoes - can I steralise the bin with bleach? have planted most of my boarder plants so happy about that but very keen to get veg seeds in the ground and waterfountain hooked up!

Hello and welcome to DIT  A good scrub of your dustbin should be fine for potatoes - no need to sterilise it, IMO. My potatoes just go into the soil, and I don't sterilise that ;):D

What seeds will you be planting?
