In my garden in March..........

I know what you mean - I was so pleased when the onions peeped through. Something has been digging my garlic up though, not sure if it is our dogs, cats children or the *ing squirrel (who has already taken most of the buds off my apple trees).
I've had one onion and one garlic clove lifted up by mysterious means - both of which I just rescued and stuffed back in
The garlic clove hadn't sprouted at that point but had a healthy load of roots growing off it already - so it was quite good in a way to see how they develop - silver linings and all thatLurker0 -
Hello all, I've moved in to my new house and garden and have got on the internet again today (at last!) 2 weeks exactly!). Here's a photo of our blank canvas::
Since we we moved in, we've dug up a lot of turf (and found 3 chafer grubs, which was little worrying, but we'll look into nematodes at a later date). We've planted out the onions and garlic, and put a few first early tubers in an old bin. We've built our mini greenhouse, planted out the rhubarb, put up a couple of bean wigwams, bought some growbags for cucumber, tomato and courgettes. Indoors we've started off radish, tomato (2 varieties), leeks, okra, asssorted salad leaves, some herbs, and some annuals as well, calendula, marigolds, a few more.
We've also started putting out regular food on the bird table, on the floor nearby, and on a hanging feeder in the tree, also occasional fruit, and some fat balls. We've had loads of crows, sparrows, blackbirds, song thrushes, collared doves and wood pigeons, a few coal tits, and a robin. As well as that, yesterday at 2pm a fox sauntered happily through!
Two weeks ago I had a postage stamp sized garden that backed on to a main road, got no sun - and I mean NONE - no crops would grow - and our 2 year old had nowhere to play. I'm quite happy with the change! :T0 -
You've got a great summer ahead of you clairefun!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0

Gorgeous day in the garden today, dug over some little bits and removed weeds and DH planted his new peach (which he got at woolies with a free willow tree - what are we going to do with that in a wee garden?). I've explained to him that you must remove the weeds before planting - saves yourself a lot of bother, mind you he never does any weeding. Anyway I dug down over a foot to get this big root out of what must've been a dock and there was this big grub at the bottom, nasty looking thing , and DH was overjoyed - it's a dock grub - much prized fishing bait, never fails apparently, so he's made it a little house in a jam jar and he'll be off to the reservoir tomorrow, might get a trout for tea?
I've planted the last of my garlic - i know its late, and I've got a parsnip! One little seedling poking thru - hooray!
My homemade compost is all but finished so i can think about moving the bin and how it will fit into the master plan, not easy in a small space.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Good morning! Not been out for a few days - it's been really cold here.
My garlic is all sprouting away - hurrah! We also have carrots, potatoes and peas sprouting in the polytunnel. My cherry, damson, and plum trees have lots of flower buds.
Clairefun - great pics. Where are you going to start?
We've ordered some willow fencing from this site. It'll probably not be here until after easter. DH will take some time off then to get it fitted.
Hope for a bonfire later. I love it when the clocks go forward - extra hour of light in the evening.

Hello, I've been in my garden today (an achievement in itself) - not really, I just don't often go there!
I had to re-do a little log roll fence which fell over as part of the garden is grass and part is stones. It looks quite good now
I saw the title of this thread and thought it was wildlife in the garden but instead I see photos of nice gardens
On the wildlife tack though I ordered a free birds in the garden booklet from RSPB (off the freebies thread) and last week at 3am (couldn't sleep) a big fat green froggy toad thing went hopping across. It did 'rain' frogs / toads once in a heavy storm (which was very weird!), and we most often see voles in the garden0 -
Been digging today - and backfilling.. working on a raised bed! More details to be found here.. but some of the photos (for those who want)..
there's lots more on the blog though. I'm doing three raised beds, got a greenhouse (plastic variety) to go up at some point, and as many fruit and veg as i can cram into the three beds (3 x 3 meters) and lots and lots of pots!!! Got lots of seedlings inside as well - no spare windowsills left!

Looking good Keth, but that looks a lot of hard work!
I now have 2 parsnips! yay!
have also run out of seed compost. Saw Monty Don using all his own homemade stuff that would be nice but as a lessser mortal I need to buy some, I just wonder how much I do actually spend on the garden??Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Hello all!
For the first time in two weeks I've finally managed to get out in the garden. Most of the time I spent pulling weeds out of the cracks in the paving stones and out of the beds I'm trying to prepare for veg, but I then spent three hours sitting out in the dark with my fire-bins burning the woody waste sitting at the bottom of my garden since we moved in. It's amazingly therapeutic, but i now smell like a kipper

Apart from that, lotsof seed sowing of crops, lots of pots, and then on to the other blank canvas of our allotment.
It's going to be quite a bit of work, but that really is a blank canvas! And I can't wait!:j0
