I agree pixel, I have had the same experience. If I pay by cash and its say £32, I can see they grudgingly give me back my change. So now I pay by card then I can decide if I want to tip or not and how much

I'm afraid I don't tip hairdressers, I have never noticed them hanging round the till as I paid either. I have noticed the cost of a cut rise hugely over the last few years and the amount of time that is spent with me reduce. To be honest I think that tipping in the UK is dieing a death, even when I had a weekend job as a waitress 7 years ago I would rarely get tips (maybe I was rubbish at it ;) ) I just don't think people tip any more, especially given we have a reasonable minimum wage.

However I do now get my hair cut at the local college which so far I have been very very impressed with.

I think it depends on each persons money situation.... If someone can afford to tip £10 then great but if someone can only afford £1 then thats great aswell.

Also depends how happy you are with your cut and if its a regular stylist you have??

I tip £2-3 and see the same stylist all the time and whenever i do tip her shes always very grateful.

I dont think the people who dont tip should feel guilty as there will always be people who tip (and some who do not)

I train very hard for my job and do weeks of training most years and if someone tipped me id be very greateful £1 or £10 ( but i dont get any tips)

Tip if you can, the amount you can afford and if you cant afford it then people should understand that no everyone can.

  • I realize this is an old thread, so hopefully no one minds if I bump it. I was curious to know everyone's opinion on this situation. I haven't had a haircut in nearly a year, because it seems so expensive everywhere. I have long, straight hair, so I just let it grow, but the ends are looking really frazzled and I can't even wear it down any more because of how dry the ends are. I have just purchased a great deal on Groupon of a full head of highlights and cut and finish. The original price was £99 and I got the deal for £29. I could never have afforded it at the original price! The Groupon rules say that if a tip is required, to tip on the "pre-discounted amount". Do you think that means I should bring £10 to tip? I have never had highlights before but from what I have read here it seems they might take a long time to do, so I know I should leave something, but I thought of giving the stylist £35 for the service. I didn't realize there would be other people to tip as well (the hairwasher? doesn't the stylist do all that? I guess I've never been to a place that fancy lol).
    Thanks for your thoughts.

I have yet to see a salon that requires you to leave a tip, its totally up to you.

I would base it on your own experience: was it worth the money, did the salon staff do what they could to make things go nicely: I have had hairdressers yank at my hair when they brush it whilst others offered a chair which gave a back massage whilst I waited for the colour to take on my hair. Another salon I went to didn't listen to my instructions to "go lighter" and I ended up with darker hair yet another gave a free treatment, gloss coat (noticably showed) and listened to my instructions to the word, asking me what else I'd like whilst cutting "this bit emphasized or this bit cut back".

I think its about communication and feeling at ease. If you felt you had a decent enough time, were not left to gather dust whilst the salon member had a chat with her collegue/texted on her crackberry...etc as at the end of the day, a tip isn't just about saying thankyou, its also feedback and telling the hairdresser that you were or were not impressed.

I have been to salons before where I have not tipped, it is possible not to tip if your not happy or if you felt the cost was high enough already.

DD just had her hair cut and blow dryed in a local salon, it would of cost £30 but we won it so I gave the stylist a £5 tip, I would of done the same if we hadn't of won it, I left the tip with the salon owner who was on reception at the time, I would say though that we were super pleased with the salon, staff and haircut and we will both definitely go back and I'm telling my friends too, I really think its individual and dependant on your overall experience and whether or not you'll go back, I used to work in an industry where tips were crucial to us financially and we always looked after the regulars who tipped as a priority, sad but true - hth:)
Thank you for this site Martin

  • Agree with jenniewb - no salon requires you to leave a tip, but I personally think you should if you felt that you got good service, and that that amount should be at your discretion. If you don't want to give a £10 tip (or indeed any tip) then you don't have to!

I'm 'between hairdressers' at the moment, but I did tip my last hairdresser about £3 a time (it cost £28-30 for a wash, cut and blow dry, and my stylist washed my hair herself). That was in a posh independent salon in a reasonably middle class Lancashire town, but I felt it was worth it because she was really lovely and cut my hair exactly how I like it. I also took her a bottle of wine to say 'thank you' when I had my last appointment with her, and got her chocolates at Christmas.

The most I've paid at a hairdressers was £45 (colour slices, wash, cut and blow dry in a 'brand name' salon in a reasonably well off town) and I tipped about a fiver, again because they'd done a good job of it. However I have also not tipped hairdressers for poor service, admittedly this was a supposedly cheap salon but it was the little things that I'd expect, like getting the hairs brushed off the back of my neck and stuff, that made me decide not to tip them or come back.

I've been going to same hairdressers for about 12-13 years and I do tip. I tip £2 for a wash and blow dry and more for a cut and colour. The price has gone up but I still like to tip something because I enjoy going and they do a good job. They often say to me don't bother with a tip if I haven't got any change so that's quite nice to know!!

I used to pay £35 for colour and cut and used to tip £2-£3. Then when I went for about the 3 or 4th visit they said that it would be £40 next time as my hair had got longer, fair enough, and I continued to tip. Except I then had several inches cut off taking it to way shorted than the first time I went to the salon but the price stayed the same! So I didnt tip after that!

Tipping is an american custom that has worked its way over here. I certainly have learned tipping from going on holiday to america! I always tipped 10% at restaurants however having been a waitress for 6 months now I see how most people dont actually tip and how this is actually too much really! If every customer tipped 50p or £1 where I worked if they were happy with my service then I would be earning a huge amount in tips! And the same goes for hairdressers. Think how many customers they have that day, or week. There really is no need to tip extortionate amounts like £10 for a £30 cut! yikes!
