I wasn't just referring to cold callers but chuggers and being hounded in supermarkets too, this never use to be a problem at least where I livedglobetraveller wrote: »I would tend to disagree. When I

Why not try and put yourself in their shoes perhaps to get some understanding of where they come from? It's ignorant people like you who I don't much care for.
Though it may not have occurred to you because of your limited intellect, there is a difference between not being able to decipher a sign, and instead interpreting it in a positive way. Your defeatism is typical of the type of person who views such challenges as beyond their capabilities.
I have also never heard of the term "carp job it is", so maybe you should consider taking a leaf out of your book by getting an education perhaps?
Exactly that my friend; you can only dream of what it's like out there in the real world. It's incredible how one-dimensional some people think. I really do pity you. Besides not being able to fight yourself out of a wet paper bag, you wouldn't stand a chance against me intellectually either.
Gosh, how ridiculously ignorant you are.
My "no cold callers" sign means exactly what it says. Stuff "beating them with intelligence", I don't want to have to speak to them, or have them ringing my bell in the first place.
If I'm feeding my baby, or changing a nappy, and I have to stop what I'm doing to answer the door to someone that can't understand that I don't want to speak to them, I'm going to be really angry. In fact, I will probably give them a mouthful.
Also, if my kids are asleep, and some idiot rings the bell and wake them up, I'm going to be having a hissy fit.
The sign is there because I want privacy, and I don't want to be interrupted. If I want any services (Double glazing, a new energy supplier etc) I will be doing it after some research into the best company and best offers, not on a whim on my doorstep.
My great grandmother also has a "no cold callers" sign, because it is incredibly hard for her to get to the front door with her mobility issues. If someone knocks on her door, she wants to know its someone worth getting up for. It's not fair that because some spanner that chooses to ignore her request, she has to spend 5-10 minutes getting to the door.
Learn some damn respect for other peoples wishes.0 -

Bodygas. Although normally suspicious of self proclaimed unlimited intellect, I would like to congratulate you on your undoubtedly deserved promotion from an unwanted, inconsiderate door pest to an unwanted, inconsiderate forum pest.
Pity your not still mithering at doors, it could have been emotional.0 -
No it's not a weird logic. I don't claim to know anything about psychology, but from my own personal experience I find that those who have signs on their doors are basically opening themselves up to surprises.
If during the course of a pitch there is the slightest bit of interest from the customer (which by the way does not necessarily have to come from the product - it can be from merely observing the salesman) then they have already been taken out of their comfort zone. Basically because they have already entered the situation with the notion that nothing is going to convince them, if something does take their interest then they are automatically taken out of that comfort zone - something they were not expecting.
Anyway this was in retaliation to the poster (Dave) who was obviously foolish enough to believe some sort of stereotype that salesmen and women are not in the least bit educated.
In my original response I offered a rational explanation as to how to deal with some of them respectfully, but this fool decided to talk to me in such a rude manner. If this' Dave' hasn't the foresight to learn from those who have actually "been there and done that" then I've got no time for such people.
I could not give a monkeys about dealing with them "respectfully".
Respect works both ways and if they do not "respect" my request for them to not bother me, they deserve no respect from me in return and will not get any.
FYI, in my experience, people who feel the need to constantly boast about their intellect are merely highlighting their lack of it.0 -
If you have a sign up they shouldnt be knocking and I would feel justified in telling them to sod offNeeding to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0

Agreed but we get people like Bodymass who have some weird logic and some how think it doesn't apply to them. If he went to my door and ignored the notice, all he would get lets say unwelcome greeting.
I would much rather not have a notice in first placeIf you have a sign up they shouldnt be knocking and I would feel justified in telling them to sod off0 -

I am a window cleaner having started from scratch last January following redundancy six months earlier. To build the business I had to go door knocking to ask each home owner whether they needed a window cleaner. This method has brought me approximately 85% of my current customer base. I did try leaflet drops alone but the uptake was very, very low. Since taking my service, some of my clients have placed those 'no cold callers' sign in their windows; so I enquired whether they would have minded me knocking on their doors even with the sign and the majority said they did not see my line of business as a 'nuisance caller' and would not have minded.
When canvassing now I still see these signs and tend to ignore them to be honest - if I had taken notice then I would have cut out a significant section of potential business. I have never had anyone object to my knocking where they display a sign.
I would like to know what your thoughts are - do you consider those signs only apply to the utility/double glazing companies?
Thanks in advance
FDM
My sign says:
NO COLD CALLERS.
This means no
- Sales canvassers (double glazing, gas, electricity, cleaning supplies or otherwise)
- Preachers (I don't need salvation, it's too late, move on)
- Photographers (I have my own camera and a white sheet, job done)
- Police (I didn't do it, honest)
HOWEVER
Feel free to knock if you are
- The postie (I like you, you're ok)
- A courier (No, really, knock the door, stop leaving cards when I'm home!)
- A window cleaner prepared to tackle this place for a good price)
- Friends and family (if I like you)
- People bringing me large amounts of money (I'll even make you a cuppa!)
- A milkman0 -
I used to get plagued by door knockers quite a lot (work from home most days) but thankfully a couple of signs have got rid of 99% of them. I did have 1 chap from Anglian windows who knocked and similar to OP said he wasn't selling- gave him short shift and e-mailed Anglian to complian and they sent a very apologetic e-mail back0

i usually send the dog to answer the door to these kind of people.Im known as the 'Fixer' if you have a problem, come to me and i can fix it for you.0

I just say "not interested, thanks" and shut the door. Why over-complicate everything?Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0
