Bloddy door salesmen!

We've got a sticker on our front door saying "ATTENTION: We do not buy or sell at this door".
The doorbell just rang and there was a bloke there asking if we'd like a quote for energy efficient windows & doors.
So I pointed at the sign and said "We do not buy or sell at this door.", to which he replied "I'm not selling, I'm offering you a free quote."; I just pointed at the sign and repeated "We do not buy or sell at this door.".
Maybe a I need a bigger sign, with more detail on it, something like:

As you can see I have put up a sign on the door
saying we don't buy and sell at the door,
so what the heck makes you think that knocking
on my door against my wishes is going to make
me want to buy anything from you????

I think signs just attract them more - they see it as a challenge!0

They ignore signs they either unable to read, a moron or think it doesn't some how apply to them
I either ignore the door if I know its a cold caller or dont give them time to speak when they get me off guard either way I make it a policy to never ever buy from cold callers0 -
I made a sign that stated we don't buy at the door and like you, people still knocked...free quotes, people wanting gold, windows etc etc...anyway my sign now reads:
We do not want to change our:
- utility provider
- windows
- religion
Neither do we buy, sell, donate or want quotes at the door, so please don't knock or ring the door bell.
when I had the don't ring door bell, some prat knocked instead and when I pointed at the sign, he said he didn't ring the doorbell....but since the sign is up, we had no-one knock (or ring!) so it is working as several have come to the door, read it and walked away...0 -
We had a Mini bus full of young offenders from a rehabilitation centre in Nottingham(150 miles away) selling pegs and cloths etc. I spoke to the police and was told they sometimes do this, but should of let them know. I just thought it was a ideal opportunity for them to case a quiet cul-de-sac estate.:eek:0

How about inviting them in then saying - with a big smile on your face: "Have you let Jesus into your life yet?"
Bet they run a mile!!:p£2 Savers Club 2016 #21 £14/£250

This is quite interesting to me and my line of business.
I am a window cleaner having started from scratch last January following redundancy six months earlier. To build the business I had to go door knocking to ask each home owner whether they needed a window cleaner. This method has brought me approximately 85% of my current customer base. I did try leaflet drops alone but the uptake was very, very low. Since taking my service, some of my clients have placed those 'no cold callers' sign in their windows; so I enquired whether they would have minded me knocking on their doors even with the sign and the majority said they did not see my line of business as a 'nuisance caller' and would not have minded.
When canvassing now I still see these signs and tend to ignore them to be honest - if I had taken notice then I would have cut out a significant section of potential business. I have never had anyone object to my knocking where they display a sign.
I would like to know what your thoughts are - do you consider those signs only apply to the utility/double glazing companies?
Thanks in advance
FDMI do not smoke. I last smoked on 03 November 2011. I will not give in to that awful addiction again.0 -

 We had one of these last Friday - my own personal Rottweiler answered the door (aka OH) and proceeded to "grill/interview" the potential salesman for over 5 minutes - questions like "what did you do" (to get into trouble), "how did you get caught", "how long did you serve" etc. etc. This was all after the chap had said it was his first time selling
Talk about trial by fire - he couldn't get away quick enough :rotfl: I love letting the OH deal with all doorsteppers - it's sooo entertainingNumbers are dwindling now - I suspect they all think he's some sort of psycho.....

We used to get the religious folk trying to sell us their religion and get us to go to their church at our door, one day, my mum sent me to see them at the front door and told me to say 'My Dad's a really devout catholic and if he finds you at his front door he's going to go absolutely mad' I told them, and the Jehovah's witnesses never came back!0

We went on honeymoon to a rural cottage in the middle of no where.
Second day...flipping Jehovah's witnesses knocking at the door! Couldn't believe it! Told them in no uncertain terms where to go (politely, mind).0
