My Sky was set up on 17th December.
You are tied into a 12 month minimum term, so you basically can't cancel unless you pay an Early Termination of Contract (ETC) fee.

I only signed up because I was told I could have advert free recordings from the On Demand box. Now I find its untrue
This will only be "untrue" if you don't have a broadband connection to your Sky box. Otherwise, why is it untrue?

Do note that this thread originated in April 2013...

Programmes recorded from 'live' in the normal pvr way do have adverts, but those via the internet (eg boxed sets) do not.
  • New to the forum! I quit subscribing to Sky £47.** per month at end of September. I informed Sky through their online chatroom. I pay in advance. Sky switched my Sky off end of October - fair enough - but now they want to bill me for same amount for October and have just sent me a threatening letter quoting "debt agencies" Anybody any experience of this? Reply appreciated before I tackle them.

Did your Sky contract actually end in October, though? Did the "online chat" accept your cancellation or tell you rather to telephone? If They did accept the cancellation, did you keep a screenshot of this?
Also, are you sure you could actually cancel in September? If you were still within your minimum twelve month term then Sky would still bill you for the remainder even if you cancelled (an Early Termination of Contract fee-ETC).
I guess it all hinges on you being able to prove that the "online chat" accepted your cancellation. As far as I am aware, you cannot cancel via this route.
  • Thanks for the replt much appreciated. As far as I am aware we were not in any contract. We have had the same package for 3-4 years now and I assume that we are not under any contract. I did not save any screenshot of my correspondence with the Sky agent.

So you need to clarify exactly why Sky are billing you for an additional month's services. Only Sky will be able to tell you this, but I suspect it's because of the online chat "cancellation" which you can provide no proof of unfortunately.
  • Thanks but I did stop my DD after my September payment, and Sky provided my channels for the month then stopped them at the end of month. Their bill is for November; I did not get any of my package for this month, why should I pay them?

As I said, you need to confirm whether your "cancellation" was accepted/recorded in September. It's irrelevant whether you stopped your Direct Debit since, if your subscription remained active, Sky would have still requested payment from your Bank and been refused.

This would put you in arrears with Sky and they may well have simply cut you off.

Best contact Sky and thrash this out with them, nothing more can be done here on the forum.

Since I now actually OWN my SKY box after cancelling my contract (I was with them for more than 12 months) ..... why can I not access the NON SKY recordings that I have made on MY BOX?
I understand and accept that I need to pay £10 per month to use the recording functions ..... that seems to me to be fair enough. ..... but surely I ought to be able to watch recordings of terrestrial TV that I have previously made on MY box.
