No, the box is yours from day one of your contract, as is all the equipment.
With VM it is never yours, it's leased.

Thanks for the advice all. It seems there are two choices.
Continue to pay Sky £10 a month for the ability to still use the Sky+ box. Or, scrap the Sky+ box and buy a freesat recorder, although that is a couple of hundred quid.

Someone else told me about a 3rd option, where I simply buy a freesat card, which goes into my Sky+ box and allows me to receive and record the freeview channels.

    Anyone any ideas about this?

The third option is to do nothing after you cancel. Your viewing card will become a Freesat from Sky card, and will enable you to view all the free to view channels they offer.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

No,it won't.You still have to pay the £10 odd for the record functions,Sky don't do a "Freesat from Sky" service that allows you to still use the record/play functions or every man & his dog would be doing it instead of buying the more expensive "Freesat PVR's"

But this means they will lose the ability to record, rewind, pause.

The recorded programmes will still be stored, but cannot be played without a subscription.

OP, yuo need to decide how much these features are worth to you.

Chances are when you cancel you'll be offered it for half price for 6 months. This, to me, sounds like better value than paying £10.50 a month just for the Sky+ functionality!

Since cancelling, we've had some great offers. Such as basic package half price and a £50 credit. Cancelled after 5 months and so paid next to nothing.
We've now got it free for 6 months. Have only ever had a basic package. Guy on the phone asked what channels we wanted in our free package. I asked what were we allowed and he said anything we want - so we've got movies, sports, etc all for free. Will be cancelling again when the deal runs out, of course!

As already advised, you can't do that with !!!!!! unless you pay £10 a month forever. A Freesat PVR is the solution, one-off cost only.

You've got confused about the 3rd option. A 'freesatfromsky' card is what you're thinking of, but it's just the same as your card will be when you cancel your subscription. So DO NOT buy a card. The ONLY way to record on your sky box is pay AT LEAST £10 per month. I'm sure you can get a Humax Foxsat refurbished for £180, anyone know of them any lower?

Just spoken with Sky. They told me that there is no such this as paying them £10 per month to keep using the Sky+ box as a recorder.
They said if I cancel, I lose access to the recorded programs, and I also lose the ability to pause / rewind and record TV.
