Thanks for that, they did also say though that they would add charges on top of what I owed for the direct debit not being honoured. Just scaremongering and bullying!0

No - if you don't pay by DD, like many others, they charge more - and te Govt allow this. You tell them the mandate is cancelled and to bill you. There cannot then be a bounced DD fee.0

Have just recieved the final bill, and don't understand it one bit but it's £33, so not going to argue! Am going to pay by debit card and then cancel the DD.

I would not pay by card as they may take "recurring card payments" .
Just pay by the bank giro debit paper or find another....just in case.0
