Anyone who applies to 1-3 jobs as advised by the Job Centre Plus won't find a job for a long long time. Expect to receive only several replies after applying for over 600 jobs.

Don't I know it. But you can't apply for what isn't there.

I look on and off all day but very little changes. It becomes like an addiction.

Will I work hard again in my next job? I very much doubt it. It's not worth the trouble these days - the harder you work the less they appreciate you for it and they just take you for granted. The lazier you are, the more powerful the message the boss gets when you do something for them.

I think I'll be as eager to work as I had done in my previous job but I know what you're saying. Boss' pets always get the nod over the rest when it comes to appraisals and handing out projects.

As mentioned before do good friends/family who point out jobs totally unsuitable or as has just happened today go one step further and phone connections for you. I have just had a guy on the phone offering me the odd days work here or there, while I appreciate the though like part time the odd day here or there does nothing but !!!!!! up your JSA and HB and by the time you get there you'd actually be worse of than if you just stayed on the dole. So what to do? Do I turn it down and risk a friendship or do I accept and be worse off? I'd take it if I thought it would become permanent but by the sound of the guy he's struggling himself.
  • In this economy there is no shame in being unemployed, it would only be shamefull if it was like in the 1960s when you could leave a job at lunch time and get another one before you had finished your sandwich.
Its a different world now and all anyone can do is try their best by apply for anything and asking around. If you cant get anything your not a worthless person its just the state of the economy.
My Mum has just been in hospital and when I was visiting there was a young woman in the next bed to her who was about 30 ish. She had numerous brain tumours removed and was really big from all the drugs. When faced with life and death problems, unemployment is not the biggest deal.
I think we are more than our employment status, and being a good partner,Dad, Mum or son/daughter is more important.
I think one of the worst things about being unemployed apart from obviously the money is the uncertainty really.
If you accept an odd days work here and there then it as you stated will mess up your claim.Your friend should understand this and surely wouldnt fall out with you over it.
  • Aside from the lack of decent daytime TV I'd say that the worst thing is obvious; lack of money - though admittedly I have actually had a job and received less money than when I was unemployed.

Another bad thing is that if you're on it long term - the worse it gets for your CV - and so it probably makes it even more difficult to then get a job (unless you lie).

*There are several positives to being unemployed too*..........but this is a 'negative' thread so I'll leave them for now.

*I'm going to be unemployed again very soon, so I'll cheer myself up with my 'positive list'.

That the Job Centre has NO IDEA about specialist workers and don't seem able to help me get a job in my profession. I'm SO glad I'm a self starter who aslo has an outreach career transition thingy for 6 months cuz I was made redundant.
That it's taken them over 8 weeks to give me the 'compulsory interveiw', even though I put my claim in the day after I got made redundant.
That when I go to sign, on it's OK for my adviser to keep me waiting for well over 30 minutes after my appointment but if *I* show up one minute late (because the bus was late) I get torn off a strip and told they can stop my benefit.
That if I complain (OK, so I'm a little forceful) about this when it happens for the third time in 6 weeks, the security guard hovers around and listens in.
That by the time I've run the gauntlet of the 'chavs' at the front door on my way in that I stink of cigarette and (worse) drug smoke when I get to my signing in appointment.
That nearly ALL the 'chavs' outside the jobcentre have better mobile phones than I do!
