There's another video where the shooter nearly knocks his own block off with the ricochet from one of those.

Aged 8 ? Uhuh ... any more gems like that?

I've got to admit I think 8 is a bit too young. I think I was 13 or so before was allowed to use a firearm. It's not only an issue of mental maturity, real guns are heavy and the user needs to be fully in control to be safe.

Pardon, "harvests"? It's a gun not a New Holland combine and what the hell do you mean about harvesting power? What are you on?

Ah ... I see you do understand perfectly. Child = immature adult of the species. Immature adult with deadly weapon = potentially deadly implications for themselves or others. Well done.

    Yeah so you said.

It's odd, when you interfered with someone else's parenting you put up a quite succinct and well thought out argument.
Yet when pushed further you become a pedant, read between the lines for your own sensationalisms and try and mock what was actually a fair argument from myself.
It's the whole 'he who shouts the loudest usually has the least to say' adage. In other words stick to writing what you believe in a well constructed way, without losing the base of your original thoughts in a hissy fit of he said - she said and an attempt at one up man-ship.

Murph, I may be able to help. How far from Tampa are you willing to travel?

We're touring from Tampa to Key West and back to Miami, so Southwards wouldn't be an issue. Going North, maybe 50 miles or so, going East, probably not at all.

    I'm ambivalent on this.
If the possibility that he can shoot realistically exists, then I'll find out if it is something that he would like to do and then I'll start the process of seeing if he can comprehend the importance of safety/range instructions etc.
If any of the above are negative, then the ship won't be sailing ;)

So why does a range in Florida give a visiting Brit an M16 and a trailing 8 year old a PPK?? For the promulgation of excitement??

Capitalism and the American Way ;).

You may not like it (& I suggest that you don't), but the Gun Ranges are providing a legal service , people who use their service are doing so of their own free will and the world keeps on going round.

Those that want to use their facilities go and those that don't stay away !

Went shooting in Australia last year with my adult nephew (he's lived there since he was 7) and 21 yr old son.

Initially it was about doing something that just wasn't possible in the UK and about experiencing shooting (chose the Glock 17, 92f and a .44 magnum rifle).

It was a great experience, none of us are gun 'nuts' and if my son had been younger I would have still taken him.

In the US gun range shooting is a pass-time for a lot of people, like golf is for some over here in the UK.

Have fun Murphy, you've got the right attitude. Unfortunately some people will always take their moral/intellectual points of view from news headlines and an overly active middle-class liberal standpoint.

seeing as the thread has moved on topic, off topic and back again on topic - I've found a couple of videos.

Be warned 2sides, you're righteous indignation is probably going to explode ;)

    Give a monkey a gun &

    family fun day

I can't vouch for SFW, as I've watched them with the volume off !

Have you thought about how you might deal with the fact that your kid might be smarter than you think and recognise the danger from others possible like that he might see on the range? I don't know if you have experienced it yourself - not a nice feeling - you kind of want to make an exit a bit like those guys did when the chimp let loose, but because you know it's supposed to be social and you don't want to offend anyone, least of all those that took you there, you stay and it's no fun after all ?

Its straight down the line for me.
If MTK would like to shoot, is legally able to shoot and is able to follow the rangemasters instructions 100%, without any wavering, then I'll let him shoot.
If he fires the gun and doesn't like it, or, if at any stage leading up to firing the gun he doesn't feel comfortable/changes his mind, then its time to safely lay down the gun, attract the rangemasters attention and then follow his instructions on leaving the range.

Have you ever gone to a gun range in the US ? If not, it may surprise you if you ever went to one to see what it was really like, rather than what you think it will be like.

some people view guns and knives as tools,. like me , i was brought up on a farm in the uk and i was firing guns and carrying big sheath knives by the age of eight, despite media driven drivel i still view guns and knives as tools and would never dream of using them as weapons to harm people with, its the media that demonise tools as weapons, guns and knives dont kill people, people kill people

I have a couple of contacts that might be able help but both involve a two hour drive. That may be too far, but one recommendation did sound quite promising...

    Okeechobee shooting sports

Apparently, lots of families and children go there. Also, if you are after something unusual, rent an AR/AK with the slide fire stock. I have no idea what a slide fire stock is.
