Ok please help ..........DS was sick all over our bed.

So I picked everything up, and took it to the laundrette, not stopping to read the instructions.

Only when I put the pillows in the tumbler did I read the bit that said do not wash, dry clean or tumble dry. Since I'd already washed them (oops) I put them on medium in the tumble drier for 45 mins, and then lay them out on clothes airers in the sun to dry. They were outside all day yesterday, and I shook and turned them a couple of times.

The feathers are still really clumpy and wet inside.

Is there anything I can do?

I don't want to hang them on the line, as the feathers just clump at the bottom of the pillow.

I have tried one back in the tumble drier at home for 1/2 hour, but it just comes out hot, and still wet. Is it safe to keep tumbling them, or should I just give up and buy new pillows?

All the ones I have can be tumbled on a low heat, just checked the label and it says low heat is ok, might take a while however as they do tend to suck the water up well. It would of course be at your own risk if the label says don't. Line drying might take a while, could just keep shaking. Other thought maybe in front of a radiator.
One day I might be more organised...........

i have washed my feather pillows recently and i put 2 at a time in my tumble dryer with 3 tennis balls and dried them that way.

they do take a hell of a lot of drying though about 6 hours per 2 pillows  they smell when first being dried and they smeel really bad, but that goes after about 3-4 hours :rotfl:

    hope that helps.

by the way this is only what i did i dont want to be blamed if it ruins your pillows!!!!

    Hi Ebenezer,

There's an older thread with some posts on washing feather pillows that should help so I've added your post to it to keep all the replies together.

Oh rats, I'd just posted and it vanished...

How many pillows have you got?
If they are marked/stained, then usually the marks don't come out even with bleach.

  • i have washed feather pillows in the washing maching but they take an age to dry in the tumble dryer, my kingsize feather quilt i have washed at the laudrette (after the cat wassick on it), and dried there-didn't take too long approx 30 mins and totally dry, came out smelling yummy and oh so clean, next time i plan on taking all the pillows to the lauderette-not money saving i know but running the tumble dryer at home for hrs with 6 pillows (i love my pillows) isn't either!!

You can squish the pillows into the machine, the feathers go down a bit when they get wet.
If there is a spin dryer at the launderette...then use it.....it will save time and money in the dryers.
Once into the dryers, then keep shaking the pillows.
If possible, ask the attendant if you can pop back the following day to finish off drying them. ;)
Dry them a bit, to get them started on the drying process and then take them home...either put next to a radiator or out on the line.
Don't leave them lying flat on something, either stand them on end, or support over an airer.
If they still feel damp the next day, take them back to launderette and give them another go in the dryers. This should help to air them off.

Tennis balls are good in the dryers, as they help to break up the clumps of feathers.
