Thornton Trouts.. home and away

Options
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I am a married man..please forgive me.
Last week I sent this email to Customer Services at Thorntons Head Office.
No response so far.Has anyone else ever had any sense from them?

Dear Sirs
I am a state pensioner, with three grandchildren under 10 years of age.
I saw your offer of a free mini Easter egg on the internet and my two daughters and I downloaded a coupon each for the children.
My wife and I took the three kids to town last Sunday and whilst the "girls" went shopping my grandson and I went to your Swansea store to cash in the vouchers.
It was only 11.00a.m and the Quadrant was quite quiet and your shop was empty, apart from a shop assistant .
I presented the 3 coupons and was told that only one was accepted per person and since there was only my grandson and myself, then only two eggs could be given out.
I mentioned to the lady that the other coupon was for a child shopping with my wife, but she was adamant .
Since it stated on the coupon that it was only one egg per person, I asked if it would be OK for me to leave the shop and return in a few moments with one coupon to redeem the other egg.
"Certainly not, since I will still be on duty" was the holier than thou answer.
We took our allotted two eggs and left.... crest fallen.
My grandson was amazed and said "what a horrible woman bampi, we won't go in there again shall we?"
I did not give any of the children your eggs, but went into W H Smith next door and bought 3 Cadbury eggs so that each child would have the same little gift.
Yes it did say one per voucher, but in the circumstances (quiet Sunday morning and an empty shop) a little discretion would not have gone amiss. Its not as if she was parting with the Crown jewels, they were only 3 for £2.00.
My wife has been a regular shopper at this store and has always had a good word to say for the staff.
Please ask them not to start acting like "posh" folk.
They will lose out in the long run.
Regards

You want THIS forum. I'll request a move for you

I've no experience with Thorntons but I personally wouldn't write a letter of complaint to a company just because one of their staff followed the rules

If it said one per transaction then maybe you could have left and gone back in, but you say it said one per person and that's what you got.
Apparently, everybody knows that the bird is [strike]the word[/strike] a moorhen
  • Sorry, but I agree with the above reply, the shop assistant was doing her job and can hardly be blamed for keeping to the terms of the voucher (Probably a very nice woman since what you say she said doesn't sound rude, so not a horrible woman in my opinion!)

To be fair in the present economic climate most stores are now keeping to the terms of vouchers as they can't afford to risk being taken advantage of (I'm not saying here that you were taking advantage just that others have and will)

As your wife was in town with you couldn't she have gone to the store after you met up to exchange the other voucher to avoid the childrens disappointment?

I don't really see the problem here as she was following the t&cs and these days people can be sacked for little things such as letting someone have a freebie (or an extra one) they aren't entitled to. I wouldn't want someone to lose their job over a little egg, plus as your family were in town they could have taken the vouchers to redeem them themselves.
I also think that if you wanted three eggs for your three grandchildren, seeing as you had two free ones already it would have been easiest to buy one more so they could all have the same and, as you say, they weren't expensive. Buying one more Thorntons egg would probably have been cheaper than buying three creme eggs.
Just a little note, I had one and it was delicious!

In this situation I would have left the shop without buying anything and come back with the third child and got all three in one go.

There are so many chancers and scammers out there and the employee will get into trouble if they do not stick to the rules.

Why is the fact you're a state pensioner relevant here?

Are you writing to complain about your benefits?

C'mon now there's no need to get all condescending and personal to this guy here. It is petty not to give someone the benefit of the doubt when they are CLEARLY telling the truth (that's just me, i still believe in people). I admit he should hardly complain about getting two free eggs and could have done a number of things in that situation.

However, the woman might have been really awful and if she provoked an emotional response then people don't make rational decisions. We just weren't there to witness it go down. And I still want to know what happened to those eggs *cough* send them my way *cough*.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING gets my back up more than OAP's who think that because they are 'state pensioners' they are owed something more than the rest of us mere under 60 somethings.
