How do 'posh' folk act when they work in a shop?Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
and still wanted more.
"Can't they use their Discretion?"
Well, "No", they can't - they are instructed to apply the rules.
The assistant does not own the shop and is not authorised to give away items.0 -
Being brutally honest OP I find your whole post offensive and I'm struggling to understand the relevance of you being married or a pensioner - I would have expected both of these to have given you the experience to know better.
Maybe if you'd considered buying something as well as just demanding freebies you may have got a little more discretion.
And as for the 'trout' comment - I really wish we could hear what she had to say about you0 -
I'm with everyone else here shop assistant was in the right. What's to say if she gives you the one extra free egg to 'test' her generosity and the come back 5 minutes later with another 10 vouchers for free eggs and say "well you did it earlier" or if she doesn't you will tell her manager she did it once in the first place. She is covering her job by saying no.Why does cling film always stick to itself but never what you want it too???0

OP, did you tell the shop assistant that you're a state pensioner? that may have swayed her and might have given her some back up if she was given a talking to by her manager.
'why did you give 1 customer 3 eggs?'
well, he's a state pensioner with 3 grandkids.
'ah, well, why didn't you say so? off you go'
maybe you should have told them you have a bad leg or something, most of these free egg offers have clauses in them; 1 per customer, unless you've got a sob story and feel you're owed somethinghelpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0 -
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I am a married man..please forgive me.
Last week I sent this email to Customer Services at Thorntons Head Office.
No response so far.Has anyone else ever had any sense from them?
Dear Sirs
I am a state pensioner, with three grandchildren under 10 years of age.
I saw your offer of a free mini Easter egg on the internet and my two daughters and I downloaded a coupon each for the children.
My wife and I took the three kids to town last Sunday and whilst the "girls" went shopping my grandson and I went to your Swansea store to cash in the vouchers.
It was only 11.00a.m and the Quadrant was quite quiet and your shop was empty, apart from a shop assistant .
I presented the 3 coupons and was told that only one was accepted per person and since there was only my grandson and myself, then only two eggs could be given out.
I mentioned to the lady that the other coupon was for a child shopping with my wife, but she was adamant .
Since it stated on the coupon that it was only one egg per person, I asked if it would be OK for me to leave the shop and return in a few moments with one coupon to redeem the other egg.
"Certainly not, since I will still be on duty" was the holier than thou answer.
We took our allotted two eggs and left.... crest fallen.
My grandson was amazed and said "what a horrible woman bampi, we won't go in there again shall we?"
I did not give any of the children your eggs, but went into W H Smith next door and bought 3 Cadbury eggs so that each child would have the same little gift.
Yes it did say one per voucher, but in the circumstances (quiet Sunday morning and an empty shop) a little discretion would not have gone amiss. Its not as if she was parting with the Crown jewels, they were only 3 for £2.00.
My wife has been a regular shopper at this store and has always had a good word to say for the staff.
Please ask them not to start acting like "posh" folk.
They will lose out in the long run.
Regards
Maybe you should teach the grandchild to be more grateful to people when they give you things for free? Also to show respect for his elders?0 -

I think the member of staff did right thing, they are the terms and conditions its not there fault you didnt want to abide by them. I wonder if Op would be happy they risked there job mealy to appease a customer who judging by there 1st post appears to think there age or martial status some how deserves better treatment than others0
