Hope you don't mind if I add my tuppence worth here ? My friend is the Manager of a Charity Shop and she sometimes has to politely refuse donations. This is because altho her shop is not a bad size the room she has behind is really small and it is a Health & Safety issue if the floor isn't clear. Also please take care with those charity bag requests that come thru the door. Read the small print as not all of them are 'kosher'.

Phizz, I had a charity shop refuse to take some stuff and it completely felled me at a really bad time. You feel the absolute pits. But I was wearing baggy old trousers and scruffy flip flops, and rather unsmart hair, so next time I got all dressed up, including full slap and my diamond ring and hair properly done, and that worked, tho heaven knows it shouldn't matter. I have also got my OH to take stuff - he has never been refused. My stuff is always nice, clean, sometimes expensive tho unwanted by us and a refusal really distressed me, so any ladies who have friends/rellies who work in charity shops might remember that perhaps ?

Hi all havebeen following thiis thread with interest and decided ineed to have a MAJOR declutter!Idid ebay alot of stuff, clothes mainly last year and the charity shop did wellonly made £20 at a car boot for 5 hours workgrr!. Can't believe how its piled up again plus baby no 3coming next month and have just discovered i have absolutely no space for his things, even his clothes eek!
Also we have just lost a car park space outside our house as some neighbours decided to get the council to white line it so my first job now is to clear out all the boxes of stuff we were going to use for more car boots, and to either ebay the very best, charity shop the rest and tip the stuff i couldn't in conscience give to the charity shop lol! Don't know where we will keep the lawn mower and bikes though as the sheds full of rubbish and leaks badly!
Anything we make out of decluttering, i am going to open a post office account and put the money in there towards this xmas as we weren't prepared last year and have had a huge credit bill and don't want to go through that again!

I have upgraded my old Ikea bedroom furniture to oak, which is coming today,:j
But what to do with the old ikea stuff, 2 wardrobes, 2, sets of draws and 3 other bitsI cant imagine it has any value, does anyone want this kind of stuff?, shall I stick it on freecycle as fire wood?
I'd list it on ebay first and see if it sells. If it doesnt then put it on Freecycle.

Well have done the living room sorted all the drawers out and rummaged under the sofa and chair to pull stuff and under the stairs is an ever growing pile of stuff for the charity shop.

I even manged to clear the floor and hoover in my office. Only I might add because someone was coming to service and balance my radiators. Mind you all I did with the stuff was to shove it in a drawer :o But at least it looked tidy.

have cleared out my wardrobe. Need to look at the boxes under the bed now. Only moved here 3 years in March and still have stuff under the bed that I never sees the light of day.

Need to do the kitchen, the rest of my bedroom, My husbands office (back bedroom) my office (front bedroom) and then I might be able to tackle the shed :rotfl:

You've just given me an idea. I used to get really cross about a certain firm that collects here, because they are not Kosher. You can look up their charity number on the Charity Commisioners website and the charity description is so vague as to be meaningless. They were featured on a Watchdog type programme recently. Now if we only put in those bags the things that we don't think the local charity shop will take, or things that are unusable for one reason or another, the bogus charities will have the expense of getting rid of all that stuff. :rotfl:

My daughter used to help at a local charity shop and its very true that they have to refuse donations due to lack of space and health and safety rules.
Some of the helpers took whatever was offered and daughter worried constantly about health and safety, also they could hardly move in the back room at times due to the large amount of clothes waithing for room in shop. I only donate now when sack is left and I do make sure I am giving it to the right people. One driver told me these collections are taken away to a central depot and distributed throughout the region when needed.

    thanks ellidee

I'm fully recovered now...I do understand, it just took me off guard really. thankfully the lady refused before she looked in the bag so it wasn't as if she was rejecting me personally (least i think she wasn't)

I managed to list 2 more things on ebay yesterday and now I have a grand total of 2 items with bids! so at least it looks like i might break even by the time i've paid ebay their cut.

Also managed to sort out my make up bags...why I had 2 I don't know. I think one was meant to be for going away but when i looked at it objectively i realised it was dirty and horrible, and not something i wanted on my dresser. I forced myself to throw away all the old, gunky disgusting bits and pieces that "might come in useful one day". who needs stubby broken eyeliners that are probably crawling with bacteria? apparently not me!

my top tip of the day? don't empty out your make-up bag on your freshly changed bed. wasted ages trying to remove bits of eyeshadow!
