Sometimes you get what you pay for. This issue probably stems from the fact that Android apps tend to rely more heavily on advertising for revenue rather than having a fixed initial cost like you'd more frequently find in the App Store.
Do these Android apps not tell you you will be spammed in the permissions list?0 -

There are often two versions a paid for app and a free one, natually the free one will lack features or have advertising banners, ot is the same/similar on my ipod touch though

Yeah iOS 5 introduced a notification bar. Do you know if the app permissions in Android let you know beforehand that an app will spam you or is it a case of only knowing when it starts happening?0 -

I have never experienced spam or malware symptoms to know, I have not updated the SE of the ipod touch, but I do notice when playing "move the box" that there is constant adverts running and the battery life is shortened somewhat. the only emails I have had on my gmail is from google for reminders etc, I suppose it depends where the OP has been using his gmail address
