Go to yorkshire, I had seen other people most about it but wasnt convinced it would be so easy.

Popped in there at 12 today to open an account was out by 12.30, signed a couple of forms showed my passport. Easy as that. Really friendly staff, did try to sell me other things like savings, mortgage etc but were ok when I said not interested.

Gave me my acc number and sortcode and said that a dual function Maestro debit/Cash card will be dropping through my letter box in the next 7days.

Cheques take 4 working days to clear so a lot better than some of the other basic accounts, internet banking and telephone banking available if you want it.

All seems really good and they said they would review it again in a few months but to be honest I don't need an overdraft and never write cheques all I needed was a decent debit card and maestro fits the bill so I will probably be happy just to keep it.

I'm going to my local branch on Monday - only rang them yesterday, and they seemed really helpful . Would like to get my account set up incase Natwest get nasty when I reclaim approx £1500 bank charges. (Might be more - only 4yrs of statements have arrived so far, despite ringing them twice to ask where the other 2 yrs are. Suprise suprise, those were my worst years...)

Bloody hell ..there's hope for me yet then!!

I applied for the Halifax Easycash account (comes with an Electron) and they sent me a photocopied letter just telling me which ID to post them and an "Easycash declaration" to sign. I could have printed the lot off my home PC. Taht's how unprofessional it all looks!!!!

Didnt mean to say it twice!
To be honest with you i would go with the yorkshire rather than the halifax. I have had the account with the halifax for about 8 years now. They are always trying to get me to upgrade but are never able to do it.

I earn 22k a year, missed a couple of credit card payments here and there and have 1 settled default. So I wouldnt class myself as a real bad risk but....

Plus halifax are not interested in the basic (easycash/cardcash) customers anymore. They don't like you to use the counter facility at the branch and insist on you using the machines. Sometimes I have needed to withdraw more than the £300 daily limit in one go, ie the other month £600. I went to the counter and instead of letting me have £600 over the counter, they made me go to the machine withdraw £300 then queue up again to get the other £300 they wouldn't even give me the £300 then let me go and use the machine.

Yorkshire seem very helpful £350 a day limit, good internet banking , polite staff and dont mind you going to the counter in the branch. Also the Maestro is a better card and more widely accepted.

S1h thanks for that info, very helpful.

There's a Yorkshire branch in the city, but I can't book any time off work til the end of the mth so won't get a chance to try and open an account until then.
