Is the van petrol or diesel?

If diesel, most of the replies so far are totally wrong

    Diesel.
I am driving it at the minute only because I've no other way of getting to work, I don't drive it during the day. I'm looking at getting myself a car so I wont have to drive it but untill then I don't have alot of choice.

    yes it is
it is exceeding the permitted noise for the vehicle when it was given its Type Approval

A CAT alone does not determine the noise level. My wife has a decat on her FTO and it is no louder than a FTO with a CAT.

Diesel van does not need a CAT for the MOT however it does need a continuous exhaust that needs to be below a certain limit noise wise.

In which case, it won't fail it's MOT... but for the love of god get it fixed. If your boss is tight, I paid £50 to have a local garage cut out my cat and make up a decat pipe and fit it, so for just the second bit expect to pay even less...

Is it a petrol or a diesel? Diesel wont fail the MOT on the CAT. Yet.

Wait until your on a journey phone the gaffer and say VOSA are checking the van over, The tester has spotted there is not CAT and they are going to tow it away can you arrange for someone to come and pick you up.

Wait 10 minutes then phone him back, So your lucky the pounds full or they have given you 14 days to fix it.

    :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this?

Despite the rumours, the "new" MOT regulations allow you to fail a car when doing the full emissions test if it's missing a cat where manufacturer fitted - but diesels don't get the full emissions test, they just get a visible smoke test, where theres no such reason for rejection.

My car (diesel) passed it's MOT this week with no cat fitted.
