Driving without a cat convertor

Hi, My work van has had it's cat convertor stolen twice now and my boss is now refusing to replace it. It is illegal to drive without one? Obviously it sounds awful (like a tank) when I drive it and I'm worried that if I get stopped I will get points on my license.

Thanks

It is not illegal to drive without one however it will fail an MOT as the rules changed so even though the emissions are OK, it still needs to have a CAT.

Why does it sound like a tank? Has he not put some pipe in to fill the gap?

Don't worry about the points, worry about the toxins you would be polluting the atmosphere with.

Tell your boss you want the vehicle repaired before you'll drive it again. Get him to provide you a replacement if he doesn't wish to repair the current vehicle.

No he hasn't replaced it even with a bit of pipe so there is a gap to the silencer.

I would love to tell him I'm not driving it but then he will say fine then I've got to find another way to work. At the minute I'm only driving it to work and back, 8 mile round trip.

Yes it is illegal, your breaking construction and use regs. What type of van is it? I've only came across one cat theft before and that was a Range Rover where it appeared the thieves took hours to hack away at them while their mates ransacked a garage when the owner was on his hols.
Whats to stop a new cat going on with a ring of weld to make it harder to slip off?

They cut it off with a pipe cutter takes 2 minutes. Replaced it once they came back again and done it a few weeks later.
  • I had a gasket blow on an exhaust joint before and the police pulled me for it.Gave me 14 days to get it fixed and certified ok by an MOT station.

the loss of performance and extra fuel costs will soon negate paying for a decat pipe
come MOT the van is highly unlikely to pass without a cat in place.
If you get a road stop from VOSA you will also be done for the emissions
