thankyou all again for all the advice
i am putting up the price to some of the houses, so i need to ring tax credits, job centre and ipresume tax office? troubler is this will mean i pay even more of my rent and i will be even worse off lol, going to do all my invoices with names and addresses this week end and post off recorded delivery
hadnt heard a thing about this threshold thing
i thought working for myself would be the way to go so i could be flexible for school and if i wasnt feeling well
now im thinking it might all get too much as im no book keeper and if it all gets mucked up and benefits get stopped we will lose our house
I know it seems like alot of work but it will be worth it if you put the work in. As someone mentioned there is terrific help on HMRC's website to help with even the most basic account keeping.
If you get some help with the accounting side of things (which I'm sure everyone will help with if you have any queries) and start with a plan on what you want to charge and set out your expenses, you can plan how you want the business to move on.
If you are receiving housing benefit and council tax benefit, the offices are usually terrific help to self-employed people. They can take all your receipts and expenditure and work out what you should be entitled to. I would see if they can do that where you live because it may mean now you are aware of what you are also spending, you don't have as much profit as you thought.
Good luck, it really can be so rewarding.0 -
ok, so i rang them up today. she said to get an invoice book, fill it in for the dates they require.
stating name and address of who i work for and how much i earn
i said to her that i was under the impression that i shouldnt disclose clients names and addresses because of client confidentiality. she said i had to for their records .this is all for the in work credit.tax office seem happy with what im doing
im already paying my stamp even though i am exempt with having a child under 12 and earning a low wage
there is no other income coming into the house
i use the car for all 16 hrs of work
so i guess i need to tell all my clients they might get a phone call?
Aren't you claiming child tax credit, council tax benefit and help with the rent?0 -
yes we get some housing and child benefit, what i mean when i say no other income is no other wage, sorry0

You do make me chuckle!!!
And you would trust the council to work all of that out and give you an answer?
As accountants, the councils are about as useful as a chocolate teapot!
How would you know that the answer they give you is the correct one?
I have yet to find a council that is able to make a decision that is 100% correct even for the simplest of calculations! My council would still swear black and blue that 2+2 =7!!!!!
Geeee I had my local council write to me and tell me that it was 'illegal' to claim Contributory ESA AND Pension Credit top up!!!!
When I told the lady that she must have got her knickers on back to front after giving that advice/decision.
She soon changed her mind, but did not offer any apology or reason for her mistake!! Surprise Surprise!!0 -

Glad I amuse you. My brother had his done by our local council and I checked it. I myself am ex-HMRC and so obviously I was going to. They got it exactly right. Not surprised you never got an apology if you told someone they had their knickers on back to front. Mistakes can happen but there's no need to be offensive.0 -

Mistakes should NEVER happen with people in authority who hold themselves out to be responsible for carrying out actions under the law.
I only say that as there are many that wouldn't know if the answer or decision was right or wrong and would just ASSUME that if the council/government department say it is right - it must be right!
As for being offensive, that was a mild comment to some comments I have made to government and local authorities in the past. I am never rude or offensive, just have great pleasure in pointing out that they are a useless bunch and couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery!
They just don't like it when some smart !!!! tells them that they are wrong, where they went wrong, why they went worng and how to rectify the mistake!0
