I'm still not decided what to do??

What do people realistically think the best result they will achieve if they take court or any other type of action?

There really is only one way to ensure that that you don't have to spend money on safety camera detectors.

  • Dear all
Like yourselves, we took out a lifetime update cover with our Road Angel Classic. We tried today to obtain drivers for our new computer and we have been told to go and use a friends computer, a neighbours computer as our Vista 7 Professional 64bit computer is non-compatible nor can it be made conpatible according to Road Angel. Having had this discussion above with a completely disinterested and unhelpful member of Road Angel's suport staff, she finally said to send the unit back to Road Angel and they would update it, and we would have to this every few weeks!!!! as things changed regularly. We have not had any letter from Road Angel and after finding this site we have joined and would be interested and happy to support any other actions group or otherwise that people feel would be the best way forward. Our feeling is County Court as the members on this site have obviously, like ourselves, helped to set Road Angel up in the first place by putting our money where there mouth was. Our risk was then; their risk is NOW.

This is a link to the Road Angel Classic at £275 inc VAT with options of support after the six month free updates at £49 (one year), £79 (two years), "one up-front payment of just £99 = life time subscription".
Wonder how long it will keep working?

Didn't actually say that it was, but they are an "authorised reseller for Road Angel" and so any invitation to treat will be on the basis of what they are authorised to sell, on behalf of Road Angel who would have provided the support for the product. Whilst the direct link to Road Angel Classic has been removed from their website, this has not.
  • Hi everyone, just found this forum.

I replied immediately by letter but haven't received a reply even though I asked for an acknowledgement. I'm concerned that those that suggest a refund are falling a long way short of what I consdier to be reasonable.

IMHO when I paid £99 in 2003 for a lifetime subscription, that meant lifetime, i.e. for as long as I continued to use my Road Angel. I'm quite happy with the Road Angel and wish to continue using it. That in my book means that there is a requirement on Blackspot or its successor company to continue to provide free updates.

Not only that but there are other cost implications: I purchased a serial card for a new pc in order that I could continue to receive updates, and I have two cars which are hard wired for the Road Angel Classic.

The argument they use it their letter is, I believe, completely false i.e. that new servers cannot support the necessary software. Indeed, even if that were the case, they have a contractual obligation to continue to provide support and therefore should select servers that allow them to do this.

However, I don't think it would be unreasonable were they to offer to supply the latest technology at cost price, together with a continued lifetime subscription, if that's what they believe is necessary in order to continue to fulfil their contractual obligations.
  • I have sent this today:

    To the Operations Manager

In response to your letter to me dated 26th March announcing the above I wish to express my total dissatisfaction.

To me, “lifetime” means the shortest of:
    (1) operational lifespan of the individual unit – mine stills works fine
    (2) the company offering the service – still operational
    (3) the original purchaser of the equipment – well I am still here,
I would conclude then that I am still due a continued service.

To take issue with your letter dd 26th March:

    1. “.. it was sold with lifetime subscriptions .... to facilitate the provision ... throughout the reasonable lifetime of the product”

No where in the original literature was there any reference to or definition of “reasonable lifetime”.

    2. “RA’s view of ... RA Classic has now expired .... has been shown to be more than durable and of satisfactory quality”

I agree, it has proved durable and of satisfactory quality. This however argues against your point that its lifetime is over – it still works
very well, thank you, and doubtless will for some years yet.

    3. “The computer servers ... no longer reasonably able to provide support in view of their age and the supporting software cannot
reasonably be migrated to new servers”

I cannot believe that you are suggesting that the original servers are still being used – heavens, as a home user my computer has
been changed about 3 times in the intervening years! As for software migration, I am sorry but do not believe you, you clearly just
do not have the will to do it. Tell me, what changes on the 1st June that makes the RA Classic obsolete other than your company trying
to renege on a contractual agreement freely entered into by both parties?

Now, on to your offer on the RA Gem. Do you really and truly consider a £30 discount and 3 months free subscription to be a fair offer to buy out your contractual obligations. Well I and others would seem to totally disagree. We shall see where this leads, but I doubt is it will finish as outlined in your letter.

Let us know if you get a reply? (which I doubt you will?)
