FUEL pumps ran dry as panic buying motorists swamped garage forecourts amid a hauliers’ strike threat.
Drivers raced to the pumps, with massive queues outside one Tesco store disrupting traffic at the entrance to the supermarket.

It wasn't too difficult for most of us. Maybe this helps to explain?
Motorists started to panic-buy fuel yesterday as Government officials warned them to prepare for a rolling national strike by militant tanker drivers
    ...
When asked if the Government would advise drivers to fill up, Downing Street’s official spokesman said: ‘People will draw their own conclusions.’

They have to give 7 days notice of a strike. Not much point panic-buying when there's not even a date yet.

I didnt think the strike was planned for another couple of weeks. People are as'ses! Theyll fill up and probably run out exactly when the fuel strike is on, 'dud if only i'd filled up sooner'

And why are we expecting it to be a crisis. The army are taking over, the last time they did this they put the fire brigade to shame!!

And Jennifer_Jane, now youre back from the petrol station how is it pragmatic? You ever think about all the vehicles that need to fuel everyday that will struggle because you car is half full. Haulage companies will suffer, tradesmen will suffer, ambulances, fire engines, police patrol cars, taxis, all will suffer because you feel the need to have half a tank of fuel doing nothing. I refer you back to the original post of 'selfish, mindless, idiocy'.

So should we all wait until they give us the 7 days notice before we all start panic buying?

And what if all the pumps are already dry by then???

Do you have a nuclear bunker in the garden, too?

The military will be brought in long before the country grinds to a halt because of some politically motivated union arm-twisting. There may be shortages in certain areas but if you have more than one petrol station in your area I'm sure they will have some between them somewhere. What will probably happen is they will start to ration how much each customer can buy & even take opening in turns. That's what happened when the last shortage happened.

I think if everyone panic buys this week, then there's plenty of time for the forecourts to be refilled by the time a strike actually starts (if/when)... and then the queues will be just as long... for people putting a single gallon in their cars - but they then wont be short of fuel.

I gotta refuel anyways, but will do it at 6am and hope asda is quiet then.
