By refusing to pay them the £30 to visit you and choosing to get this all done yourself you haven't followed the warranty conditions, and a complaint looks to have no grounds.

They still have to treat the customer fairly.

It could reasonably be argued that Mikey17 should have made a further call to the RAC at that point to tell them and ask what they wanted to do.

Yet that doesn't alter the fact that an independent party found the battery to be defective.

P.S: A complaint made to the RAC can be escalated to the Ombudsman.

    Well....

Mikey 17 got it confirmed his battery was faulty, which would have meant he could get a FOC replacement from RAC under the terms of the warranty. (The £30 charge mentioned gets refunded if the battery is confirmed faulty)

    But he chose not to.

Where are there grounds for a complaint? How did they not treat him fairly (which is an insurance company "requirement", not a SOGA one anyway)

The terms of the warranty don't automatically apply unless they are deemed to be fair and reasonable. What you perceive as a mistake on the part of the customer does not mean the RAC gets to escape liability for an undisputed faulty product. The £30 fee is largely irrelevant - as you say it would have been refunded anyway. It could reasonably be argued that the £30 fee could serve as a deterrent as it is roughly half the cost of a premium battery for a typical hatchback. They could have offered him an RAC approved garage appointment to have the battery tested without charge, but they chose not to do so. These are issues the Ombudsman service will be happy to consider.

Which ombudsman do you complain to over car battery warranties?
  • I was using my sons car 2 months ago when it broke down on the M18. Called Autoaid out and was recovered to home expecting to pay but wasn't presented with a bill.

So yes it does seem they have changed their policy. I have been with them for about 10 years now and they have always been 1st class.

How long did it take for them to come out. I'm with AA and fed up with charges.

Thinking of renewing with Autoaid if you don't have to pay upfront, (doesn't mention that on website)

    .
Hope your day is blessed with peace

Last two times I've called them out they haven't charged me. I've been with them for years and not seen much reason to change.

I have been checking out different companies & on the topcashback website this is what they say:-
AutoAid is a pay and claim breakdown cover scheme. If you experience a breakdown, call the AutoAid helpline and they will arrange the emergency roadside assistance. You pay for costs and expenses yourself and AutoAid reimburse any

There are a number of recent posts on MSE that contradicts this, saying that autoaid have arranged a breakdown contractor to attend and deal with the breakdown without requiring the policyholder to pay anything.
  • We had to call Auto aid out on 6th December, the breakdown truck arrived within half an hour and there was nothing for me to pay.
They do seem to have changed this, as last time they attended a breakdown I paid and reclaimed, which was trouble free. My refund arrived before the credit card bill.

Why on earth would you risk going abroad in a £100 banger.

I drove to Gambia in a £100 car! Just because a car has a low value, doesn't mean it isn't reliable.
