  • My ClubCard points aren't enough for RAC this year so I just joined AutoAid for £41.
Seems OK for the price. I am within walking distance of a local garage and could get towed back there if the car breaks down anywhere in the UK.

Might be a silly question but here goes.

If you have breakdown cover and you are 50 miles from home and as an example, your clutch goes. I know they will tow you to the nearest/approved garage but who pays for the cost of the new clutch/repairs you or the breakdown cover provider?

You pay the repair costs including the parts

I have been with Autoaid for 7 years. I have never claimed. Today I tried to claim because for the first time in my life I locked the keys inside the car.

They said I was not covered for this. Its in the small print. They have had so much of my money yet they will not pay out. The car is as disabled when the keys are locked inside as it is if it breaks down. They just kept quoting the small print at me. Never again will I insure with them!

The RAC WILL come out under the circumstances you describe - it's on their website. http://www.rac.co.uk/community/blog/rac-blog/october-2013/vehicle-lock-outs-on-the-decrease

AutoAid would appear to be joining the ever-growing number of companies who are declining to insure people against their own stupidity; witness the travel insurance company who have refused to bring home a young lady who fell off a 4th floor hotel room balcony because she had "been drinking"

Do haggle. Truly, madly, deeply, do. I just did, and a 5 minute phone call, after an 11 minute wait listening to Muzak, for which they were roundly abused before I even got started, saved me £144.00.

Off now to try and give Sky a similar kicking.

Oddly I can't find info about Home Start on the AA website other than they will come out if you've broken down within a quarter of a mile of your house or something.

However I'd specifically like to know, as a new customer, if my car has an engine fault and is at my house, will they come and tow me to a garage of my choice, say, 8 to 9 miles away? I realise that I may have to give it 48 hours or something, but will they do a vehicle recovery to somewhere of my choice, or only to the nearest approved garage? Anyone had any experience of this? Or with anyone else for that matter, as I'm not an AA member yet. Thanks!
  • Nearly time to renew.

Just used a comparison forum and a company called 2gether came out cheapest.

£33 for Roadside Assistance, National Recover, Home Start, and Onward Travel

Sounds fantastic. Anyone know any reason not to use these?
  • I have Gold cover with the AA - home start, roadside repair, relay and breakdown repair cover. Just called to ask why the renewal was so expensive this year and got £105 off the renewal cost. Well worth it for the cover I have and the piece of mind it brings!

e.g. Breakdown which cannot be repaired at roadside - car is uploaded, taken to a garage, I'm driven home. Car is repaired and I only pay excess (£35) Nothing more.

The AA offered to renew at £75.21 for breakdown cover. A phone call to them got it reduced to £49.99. Result!

I did a quote with these and they quoted me £33, did not take it up, a day later got an email offering 50% off. So got cover for £16.50. Wow.
