    Congratulations :T:T:T.

I know you've waited a long time or this and will be bursting with the news, but you've got a long way to go. You might want to keep it to yourselves for now.

WooHoo!! Congratulations. Having been there before I can feel your joy!
The links already given will help you so much. Just get into your head, as an earlier poster said, you don't need to buy new, or expensive! With my first, I was determined to have a particular type of pram, only to find that I hated it after a few weeks of trying to lug the blasted thing upstairs. my sis bought me one from Asda for £60 which did me perfectly for 3 years!!
You have got a long way to go though, so be cautious with whom you share your good news. At least you are safe here. I know the elation of finally getting pregnant, and you want to shout it from the mountain top!!!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

  • WOW!!! Well done. you dont want a 3 yr old girl as well? Only kidding. Enjoy being pregnant and dont forget your folic acid and your vitamins! Rest is also important. And when it comes let it be a baby and not that something that looks like a china doll [you know the type!!!]. Have fun and enjoy it.
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

    Congratulations!!

We did not spend a great deal for our third child.

I breastfeed so food was free

I use a sling so no need for a pram/buggy ( my favourite sling was £40 second hand but had been used for an older child already as well and is still going strong now at 18 months actually I saw one similar for sale yesterday for £45 :j)

Baby sleeps in our bed so no need for a cot

We use cloth nappies and I picked up a bundle of second hand terry squares.

Baby lived in sleepsuits for the first couple of months and all clothes were gifts :).

Congratulations! I am currently 33 weeks pregnant, in our area there is a market called the Jack and Jill Market (they have a website, just put Jack & Jill market in to google)- it is basically a car boot type thing for baby stuff. Not sure where you stay, but if you are in Scotland they are held in various towns at the weekend, maybe worth checking if they have one in your area, if not then maybe someone else runs something similar?

We went for the first time at the weekend and you could literally kit out your little one for a fraction of the cost and its all in pretty good condition.

Most of what we have is new thanks to friends & family, and the fact that our little one is the first grandchild, however, for future babies we will definately be going there.

Baby items, including nearly new Prams go for buttons at car boot sales.

I remember seeing a full Graco system go late last year for £30. It was in absolute pristine condition.

And Congratulations, dont be scared, half the population have done it before you.

    Hope everything goes well.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You can economise on everything except the following which must be brand new:-

Cot/moses basket/pram mattress. Seems silly to ignore SIDS advice for the sake of a few quid.

Car seat - not worth the risk of buying second hand. I was shocked when I researched it that the plastic on these deteriorates after 4/5 years so didn't accept pass-ons from trusted friends or hand mine down to my niece.

Check latest saftey advice on gaps between cot bars etc before accepting second hand equipment.

If you buy a 2nd hand push chair/pram ensure that you can take the seat cover off and wash it with a good slug of napisan on a hot wash. My reasoning behind this is that a lot of peeps store them in damp garages and sheds and mold spores (invisble to the naked eye) are dangerous for a newborn.

Feeding method is one of those things that you won't know till the baby arrives - some women go through hell trying to BF, others wonder what all the fuss was about.

If your lifestyle allows cloth nappies do save a total fortune. Spend the cash on decent wraps and simple terry squares will do for the nappies themselves. My experience was definiately that it's the out waterproof wraps that will determine the success/failure of any adventures into cloth.

The simpler the baby clothes for the early days the more wear your child will get out of them - fancy outfits can be saved for later on, when you are confident with what you are doing.

Congrats on your pregnancy Chirpy! I agree that second hand is the way forward for most things. We have been given a lot of stuff on long term loan from friends that are 'between babies' so if you know anyone in this position it might be worth asking.

This is true up to a point, however if you do want to breastfeed it is worth doing some research beforehand, see if there are any breastfeeding groups near you and find out where you can get help if you do have problems.(your midwife or health visitor will have this info)

    Good luck with everything.
  • Log on to the NCT website to find your nearest nearly new sale - you'll be able to get everything you could possibly want or need for a fraction of the price. Sharpen your elbows and get there early!

A good website if you're considering using washable nappies is clothnappytree - google it - lots of advice and second hand bargains to be had.

Also don't forget you don't need to buy everything straight away, the baby won't need a cot to begin with, or a high chair etc. wouldn't even bother getting any toys initially, they just sleep and cuddle, plus you'd be amazed at how much stuff you got given. People just love buying stuff for babies!
