MSE News: Stamp prices likely to rise as cap confirmed

I suppose having a post box for the street would be no different than having to wheel your bin halfway up the street for the dustman, that way we can all pay just as much or more than we are paying now for a worse service.... Perhaps they should put a tip at the end of every street, or get the postman to deliver milk, collect your rubbish and read your meter... perhaps they could run the street light outside your house on your own electric and still charge you council tax... maybe have a little pile of tarmac at the end of the road so you can repair it...
been mooted before!0 -
Not a good time to be a meter reader?
now that compulsory "smart meters" that can be read remotely are to be installed.
Yes I have to repair my own track and my nearest street light is about 500 yards away.
Once a month I have to put my two wheely bins under that lampost, such are the joys of living on a BOAT.

It is perfectly possible to do a [STRIKE]three [/STRIKE] two point turn in a small post van, but a large dust cart tends to knock down gate posts and crunch up grass verges.

late,as in time of day?
under EU mail, they have to offer a cheap basic serice(eg 2nd class and the reason for the price cap)
so abolish 1st/2nd and be forced to offer it cheaply?
Yes, 'late' as in time of day.
If they only had one 'class' of mail, it may even mean more revenue for RM - if it was priced somewhere inbetween the 1st/2nd class prices.. (especially if more and more post goes 2nd class?)
They could of course continue to offer 'premium' services for guaranteed delivery..

Im unsure where you see the correlation of late with 1st/2nd class mail?
there is no differentian from a delivery point of view(1st/2nd relates to MCs sorting/transport)0 -

Just that the change in delivery times means I (and lots of others) effectively no longer see any mail delivered until returning from work now.
In the old days, if someone posted something on Monday, they may have been able to expect the reply on Wednesday - now its much more likely to be Thursday..
As such, I suspect just having one class of standard mail - priced where it doesn't lose money - would be the best strategy for RM to deal with falling demand.
At the moment, imho, they seem to be effectively encouraging people to downgrade the class of mail they send due to the scale of the price changes and/or pricing them out of sending letters.

Considering my postman can't even push a small packet through the letterbox that is:
1. specially designed to fit
2. even has the words, "POSTMAN: this box has been specially designed to fit through a postbox"
... then I have no sympathy.
Our builders caught one of the slips being pushed through the door the other week. The builder opened the door for the parcel and the postman didn't even have it - he hadn't taken it from the sorting office.
So, charging more for a rubbish service isn't impressive and doesn't garner support in my books. It just makes me resent the Post Office even more.0 -

They're sure not a bargain for Standard Parcels. £8.80 for over 2KG? Why pay that when you can get a 1-2 day courier¹ pick it up for less, and have a tracked/signed-for service to boot.

why compare them to a courier service?
if RM seperated its parcel network then you could compare
oh wait,they did
so compare them to Parcelforce
If you want to get into it
how many couriers have multiple depots within a city?
the cuts & price rises will continue
makes for good privitisation fodder0 -

I did.
A much higher price for a poorer service (for me) - I simply switched to sending less mail and doing more online/by telephone/in person etc..
But that's not a sustainable way for Royal Mail to maintain the health of its long term business.
