  • Cardew has had a much more recent 'pop' at the switching sites. In fact, he even started a thread on it. Seems like he views them as very iffy unless he's commenting on them in this thread. Very strange.

    This is mechs point.

How much is the membership cost if you take just broadcall, and how much are discount card load costs again? Just want to work a few figures out.

Seriously, I may starting shopping at Sainsburys.....

Off the top of my head:

Standard membership: £1.50 +vat per month
Broadcall standard (LLU): £19.99 (inc vat i think) per month

Cashback card application and first 6 months: £9.99 (no idea about vat) one off charge.
Cashback card admin fee (from month 7): £1 (again not sure about vat) per month.
Cashback card top up admin fee: £0.35 per top up using debit card/standing order - this does not appear on your UW bill but is added to the amount debited at the time of the top up. eg a £100 top up using a debit card will appear on your bank statement as £100.35

    Hope that is some help.

p.s. for the purposes of my parents situation which you quoted, 'net' profit means I included all of the associated fees as listed above.

Yeah, that's the one I was referring to with 'more recently...'

However, thanks for linking it as it prompted me to check back, my point about the discounts/termination fee details being behind a rather small 'more info' link seems even stronger in light of Cardew's later comment:
If anyone goes to a website they want facts, not projections based on assumptions; and not have to read and understand the small print to realise how they reach a figure.

I assume that statement does not apply when using the comparison sites to bash UW

Yes, it is rather amusing, really :D. I genuinely don't know what he was thinking starting such a thread given how he's championed the switching sites in this thread so much.

PS At least the exit fees are in the small print - Eon's no discount on final bill T&C warrants not even a brief mention in any size text. Given that this is an ongoing 'exit fee' in everything but name and could prove very costly to the unsuspecting punter who finally leaves, strange that there's no reference to it (it would also have hopefully spared one high profile veteran Eon customer mucho embarrassment on here).

    Thanks for that.

If you shop at Sainsbury's it does make absolute sense to take only UW broadband and phone package.

Myself, I would be interested in the broadcall plus at £24.99 per month. A rough, but fairly accurate figures for first years total cost, one card top-up per month plus membership, works out at around £342, give or take a few pence.

If I spent our entire food/fuel budget at Sainsbury's I would make around £8 profit per year, but get free broadband/line rental and weekend calls. Forget gas and electric too expensive, but what Ive outlined above certainly is an attractive proposition.

Looks like a good deal to me.

If you haven't already, I'd advise sticking your phone number in the availability checker on the UW site to see if LLU is available in your area.

If you get any response other that "great news we can provide broadcall at our LLU pricing..." (or words to that effect) then I'll be happy to offer advise/translation on the response you do get.

    Yeah, already checked thanks.

Im sure you would agree that Im no admirer of UW energy products;), but as mech points out, and looking at what I spend, the broadcall coupled with the discount card is a very good deal. If you shop at Sainsbury's, and your spend is sufficient to generate a attractive discount that is.
  • Well, this thread has taken a rather unexpected turn, LOL. Good advice from Decado 23 regarding the LLU checker. Whe I originally put my details in it stated they couldn't offer the LLU deal, but it was clear from samknows that they could so i rang them to query it - they said they would look into it. Lo and behold a few days later the LLU checker showed I *could* get LLU prices with UW. IIRC they actually check every exchange every 6 months to see if it's been LLU'd and then transfer the non-LLU customers automatically onto the much cheaper LLU package. i'm suspecting my phone call prompted a quick check on my exchange and voila!

    Shocking News of the day.

In a turn of events totally unexpected to even the Chief Executive of the A.U.W.F. group, one of the known detractors of UW and known member of The A.U.W.F. looks to making the first attempts of a partial defection. With the A.U.W.F. now lowering in numbers and anti UW attacks becoming less frequent will this spark the end of the 3 year war of words.

Will the detractor defection be detested, keep reading to find out....

If you shop at Sainsbury's (or you want to) and they have a fuel station, the key is to get your hands on a discount card as cheaply as possible, using a UW service that represents good value and you actually need it. I still contend that their energy is far too expensive, so I still question why anyone would choose to have their entire package. Unless they are addicted to the telephone, so require the requisite number to gain the entire free call package. Though how many of UW customers would this encompass?

I would contend the vast majority of folk would be happy with broadcall and the cheapest online energy tarrif.
