Anything where you press the throttle uses fuel.
If you coast along at a nice steady speed, without stamping on th accelerator it's cheap.
Long motorway drives are best.
But normal roads, braking for bends, accelerating out, overtaking, stamping your foot down, either the ecu squirts in a lot more fuel, the second barrel of the carb and the accelerator pump chucks in a neat shot of petrol, or the supercharger spins faster as you hold the lower gear, it's not ecomonical. It's just physics, more power = more fuel, nothings free.
That's probably why my Mondeo gets crappy MPG even though it's a 95% motorway commute.
It's the M4 through south wales, lots of hills, twisty corners, HADECS, Brynglas tunnel congestion and far too many people pulling out in front of you without looking because they just now realised that if they stay in that lane they're going to peel off and end up in Cwmbran. You also get people panic braking to 60 when they see the VOSA van that's there every day, or the highways agency who are out most days.
That stretch used to flow so well (albeit with lane speeds of 55.9, 56 and 85) before the SPECS and the HADECS. It's a mess now.0 -
08 shogun 3.2 DI.D. Mostly used for short journeys, towing and the odd motorway run.
Returns about 17 mpg, £117 fill up gets me about 300 miles.0 -
It needs to be back on the road!
It might be one day! We couldn't get rid of it for some reason, it is currently tucked up in our garage. My OH wants to strip the engine and give it a complete overall, treat it like a little project, he also wants to make good the very dodgy Fiat electrics.
Other than the electrics, the car is sound! Engine is more than fine, no rust on the body and it's in very good condition inside and out. I just found it totally bonkers to drive, especially with the flappy paddle gears!0 -
Complete nonsense.
Fact - you open the throttle, the second barrel sqirts petrol in.
The petrol gets burnt twice as fast.
It's not magic, it comes from the petrol tank in the car.
Drive at 40 mph everywhere, using just the first barrel and you'll get mid 30's.
But it's a waste of a decent car.
Yes, congratulations - you've just described how a car works.:T
However what happens when you lift off the throttle?
Now take exiting a motorway. I'll lift off the throttle at the 300m marker and coast to the end of the sliproad. Most people drive to the end of the sliproad and brake when they get to the point they need to to stop. I've done all that distance for free whereas they've paid to drive it. Repeat that at roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights over many miles....geddit?0 -

And when you lift your foot off the accelerator it is completely free!
I absolutely guarantee I can drive your car and beat your best attempt at MPG without driving like a granny and probably even doing it faster than you.0 -
Late 60s I had a Hillman Imp which gave over 40mpg even with a sack of cement in the boot (over the front wheels) to improve cornering at speed.0

Ford focus auto zetec 1.6

I absolutely guarantee you can't.
But maybe you do believe what you're posting.
Maybe you have achieved the figures you claim once or twice, but even if you lift your foot off, it doesn't put back in what you used when you claim to be passing everyone else.
You don't understand carbs either, it's never free, it'll still suck petrol in, only modern fuel injection will shut off entirely, and not all types do that.
But it really is a bad way to drive to accelerate hard, try to pass everyone, then coast along in front of them trying to get the economy back up.
But I think you lost it when you claimed your average mpg with urban mpg was the same as your long run to France.
We've all been there, done that, - doesn't happen.Notmyrealname wrote: »Same as my car. I average 55-60MPG.
Are yours and Lums cars broken or would you like me to come and teach you how to drive it?

It's not rocket science.
Most people know how it works.
I don't brake at the end of the sliproad, let's throw it open, who drives as style 1 or 2?
I'm down for 1.0 -

And ALL modern fuel injection systems cut off on no throttle unless your engine speed is low enough for the anti-stall to kick in.But it really is a bad way to drive to accelerate hard, try to pass everyone, then coast along in front of them trying to get the economy back up.But I think you lost it when you claimed your average mpg with urban mpg was the same as your long run to France.

You don't even know what run I did for that photo above. Here is the 85 miles before I took it.

Prior to that I'd been to Hull and back twice, Sheffield and back and Hornsea and back.
The reason the MPG on the run to France was the same was the car had two adults, two kids plus luggage in whereas normally its just me.
If you're so confident you are right and I am wrong, put your money where your mouth is. I'll gladly wager £250 that I can beat the MPG you get in your car on a set run of your own choosing whilst driving at the speed limit or as close as is safe to do.0
