I dont think the OP has dressed it up at all, she has explained the situation, and its now been sorted out, the girl has now (according to the OP) admitted to it, has got in touch with the relevant departments and is awaiting the outcome, the money has stopped so thats that.

Some posters are so very harsh on here, people come looking for advice and get called all sorts, they get blamed for their relatives wrong doings when all they want to do is the right thng. I have to admit if I was in the same situation as the OP I would never post it on here because although there are some lovely helpful replies, there are also others that would make me feel so down and depressed.

The OP is a hypocrite. She stated she wouldn't hesitate to report anybody else regarding benefit fraud.

  • I wouldn't hesitate reporting any one if I was 100% sure they had committed fraud, I hate benefit fraud but it's totally different when it comes to close family

Would I have actualy informed on her, I dont know, but more than likely I would as she had ample opportunity to have done it herself,
I think you should leave it now, you are only digging yourself in to a hole you can't get out of.

As you say above, if you were 100% sure you would report someone. How would you know you were 100%? I suspect, like everyone else you would report it if you suspected fraud, nothing to do with % surety.

The dilemma is because it's your own family, and that is understandable.

Yet again you say you would have. No, you wouldn't. She had ample opportunity and so did you. As it is, you state it's been addressed, so best to leave it and move on.

The OP is as bad as all these that go around tutting about people on benefits. Then if they are unfortunate enough to find themselves in a situation that requires them relying on the benefit system scream "Don't judge me!" when someone questions them.

iluvmarmite, I'm a little concerned that you rang HMRC tax credits and DWP and passed yourself off in the calls as your neice, even if with her consent, and in her presence.

The tax credit helpline records calls; at least they used to when I had dealings with them professionally. My organisation would be helping claimants with disputes with Tax Credits and they'd send us the relevent calls burned to CD. Sometimes they revealed that our client had lied to them, and then lied to us. I believe DWP to have automatic call recording, too. :(

I also agree that the OP should leave this thread now, not because she is digging a hole for herself as I can't see where she is doing that at all, she should leave it because no matter what she does, no matter that she has now got the niece to own up (even though the OP had to make the call herself) some seem determined to be nasty to her, to try and wind her up, to blame her for something a member of her family has done.

It's so unfair how someone comes here for advice and help, even maybe just to get things off her chest because there is no one else to talk to and all that happens is they get put down and are spoken to in a rude and nasty way, it's not just this thread its happened in but lots of others as well, I just don't think there's any call for it.
not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!

maybe it's because people are peeved that she is quite open about being complicit in A CRIME?

She's also got herself further involved by LYING on the phone about her identity by pretending to be someone else.

Sometimes people have to face up to the crimes they have comitted. And EXPECT law abiding people to have opinions on them.

Why would someone comitting benefit FRAUD, or someone COMPLICIT in benefit fraud be expecting tea and sympathy?

When your life is a mess, stop and think what you are doing before bringing more kids into it, it's not fair on them.
