In fact the more I think about it the more I think the clock is ticking. Presumably he had to notify his employers of his new address who will feed that through to HMRC. Alot of data matching and reviews happen at the end of the tax year when p60's etc are issued and this may well then throw up the tax credits address link which will be notified to DWP etc.

Also once he is on the electoral roll and it gets updated this can feed through to the other depts. There are so many ways they can get caught it WILL catch up with them.

I dont think the OP has dressed it up at all, she has explained the situation, and its now been sorted out, the girl has now (according to the OP) admitted to it, has got in touch with the relevant departments and is awaiting the outcome, the money has stopped so thats that.

Some posters are so very harsh on here, people come looking for advice and get called all sorts, they get blamed for their relatives wrong doings when all they want to do is the right thng. I have to admit if I was in the same situation as the OP I would never post it on here because although there are some lovely helpful replies, there are also others that would make me feel so down and depressed.

I think your niece should be very ashamed of herself and you should be very proud of how you've handled it.

She is scared and so she should be, but I dont think she will go to prison now and even if she has to do a few hours community service each day it will teach her not to be so silly again, and at least she wont have to look over her shoulder all the time incase she is being followed or what ever they do.

I'm sorry to be critical again but is this really what you think she has been - "silly"? Is that what you're saying to her and how you'll suggest she talks of it in court?

She hasn't been "silly", she's been dishonest, a thief, a liar and has committed fraud over a long period of time. She hasn't even learned from her mistakes and the fact that she got away with it earlier.

I'm afraid that your attitude makes me very cross.

You are entitled to your opinion

So you do actually think that all she's been is "silly" as opposed to the way I put it?

Seriously, do not encourage her to say this in court or they'll throw the book at her; there's nothing courts like less than people who don't understand the seriousness of what they've done.
