It would be useful if drivers could check this themselves. A numberplate on a wall and a mark on the ground at the correct distance at shopping centres or supermarkets would be cheap an easy.

    Do it yourself.

A number plate on a car and pace out the distance is free.

That's the first definition you've lifted from Dictionary.com, but what about the other definitions?

    1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

    2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture: His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.

    3. an inaccurate or false statement.

    4. the charge or accusation of lying: He flung the lie back at his accusers.

Conveniently you miss out that the officer may have been acting in good faith, but then that would undermine your righteous indignation.

I think you've just shown yourself totally unable to read properly. The point of my post was to show an untrue statement can be a lie even if the person making the untrue statement doesn't realise it is untrue, it depends on which definition of "lie" you go by.

Another point you miss is that an officer dealing with traffic should have a good idea what is, and what is not, an offence. This incident if true has exposed either a deliberately lying officer or one with a drastic lack of knowledge. I'm not a police officer, but I knew it wasn't an offence.

To tell a lie, there must be an intention to deceive, regardless of which definition that you care to read.

    That's merely your opinion.

If you're stating a mistruth, you're still "telling a lie".

Only if you are aware that it is a mistruth and you intend it to deceive.

Otherwise you are just talking bÖllocks.
