What makes you think the officer was telling lies? They may have believed it was the case to have spare glasses and told the OP in good faith but to suggest they lied is OTT.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse - and applies to the police as well as us, therefore they lied. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

What a stupid comment. Ignorance is one thing, but to say it is deliberate lies because they didn't know that aspect of law is absurd."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

It's probably worse if a copper doesn't have any knowledge of the law.
I think I'd prefer it if they were trying it on, rather than handing out fines for offences they thought existed.0 -
Not sure which is the most worrying scenario - the copper making an incorrect claim despite being ignorant of the law, or the copper blatently lying...
but then watch a few episodes of one of those 'police camera action' programmes and you'll see much bullsh*t being spouted.0 -

If a copper really is that ignnorant, hopefully they'll assign him to school crossings, or just sack him for being an idiot.0 -

So he gets one thing wrong and you want him sacked? Now that is idiotic."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

That's the first definition you've lifted from Dictionary.com, but what about the other definitions?
1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.
2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture: His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.
3. an inaccurate or false statement.
4. the charge or accusation of lying: He flung the lie back at his accusers.0 -
