Just a quick heads up for spec wearers ...............
Got pulled in on a "Road Side Safety Check " excersise and was asked , among other things , did i have a spare pair of specs in the car ? as it happens i keep a pair of prescription Reactalite sunglasses in my Glasses holder but when i asked the officer what if i had not had them was told it was a £60 + 3 Points
Must admit i did not know of the spare glasses rule and was lucky i always keep the reactalites in the visor holder !
So if you drive and wear specs make sure you have a spare pair in the car at all times !

I am aware this is the case in Spain but have never hear of it in the UK although some years ago it was suggested. Were you driving a car or commercial vehicle because the rules may be different.

I've never heard of that but I'll stick my old glasses in the glovebox just in case.

Hmmm the DirectGov website says if you wore them for the eyesight portion of the test, then you must wear them while driving. Reasonable.

Logically that implies that if you break or lose them, you mustn't drive until you've got a spare or replacement pair. Not that you must have a spare in the car.

Legally, I can drive without mine (I passed and can still pass the eyesight test without them because I have one good and one poor eye) but I always have worn them. Maybe I'll stick an old spare pair in the glovebox just in case I get checked.
I need to think of something new here...

No, because there is no such law applicable within the UK
As a minimum legal requirement, motorists must be able to read a numberplate from a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet) and have a 120 degree wide field of view. ...
... every day tens of thousands of motorists drive without their glasses because of vanity, or because they have forgotten them, or because they are only driving a short distance. No matter what the reason, these people are breaking the law and are a potential danger to themselves and other road users.

    Drivers' Eyewear
... It's also sensible to keep a spare pair of glasses in the car so that you never forget them....
It's worth remembering that in some European countries it is a legal requirement to keep a spare pair of glasses or contact lenses in the car.

Wonder if they were pulling your leg?

The simple answer what if you broke your glasses, I would get the bus/train/taxi home and leave the car here.

 indeed. You wouldn't expect the Police to tell lies, but they often do.

    There's no such offence.
